Corned Beef Hash is another easy, cheap and quick to make recipe that doesn’t need any skill! No doubt you will have your own variation, but this recipe is one I’ve grown up with. Being from Yorkshire, it’s always been called ‘Taties and Onions’ in our house!
I discovered recently that our family recipe dates back to the time of my great grandma. Apparently my grandma remembered her mum making it for her in the 1920’s when my grandma was a small girl.
It’s a nice quick and easy recipe and a cheap one too, make it for a teatime snack or for lunch. We’re split in our house on the choice of condiment. For me it’s got to be fruity Branston sauce. Others like tomato and for some it’s best just as it comes.
Cost: Using some of the cheapest ingredients in the store cupboard, this is a quick, clean and clever meal that you should be able to make for a minimum amount of money.
Money Saving: Find the cheapest corned beef – which could be tinned or fresh sliced meat. Use as much or as little as you like, to achieve your favourite flavours.
Tip: Buy the cheapest potatoes – it doesn’t matter what variety they are for this dish.
Recipe for Corned Beef Hash
Serves 4
- About 1lb potatoes
- 1 large brown onion
- 1-2 slices corned beef per person
- 6 heaped teaspoons of Bisto Favourite Gravy Granules.
Get everything ready in advance and you can cook this meal in not much more than 15-20 minutes.
How to Make it –
Peel the potatoes and cut into fairly thin slices. Put in a pan and cover with water and boil for about 10 minutes.

Put the gravy powder in a cup and add a small amount of water, plus plenty of black pepper to season. No need to add salt.
While the potatoes are boiling, peel and slice an onion and fry in a frying pan.

When they’ve browned, tip the whole pan of water and potatoes carefully and slowly into the frying pan.
Then add the wet gravy powder mixture. You might need a little more gravy powder depending on how much water was in your potatoes. If you do add more make sure you’ve dissolved it in a little more cold water first to stop it from going lumpy.

Boil it up for about another 5 or 10 minutes and stir to stop it sticking to the pan. It won’t spoil if the phone rings at this point!
Put the corned beef on your plate and then serve the hot mixture on top. Don’t forget to add the fruity Branston sauce!

Enjoy!
