Insect Days!

I seem to have been having a lot of insect days lately, as another morning started with a visitation.

When I made the bed, lo and behold what did I find nestling into my pillows? Yes, you got it. A big, fat, black spider the likes of which seem to have been on the rampage again. I quickly threw the cushion over it on its comfy pillow and went for my trust spider-scooper-upper. Back I went, stealthily, in order to not disturb its beauty sleep and to make sure that I got the little monster. I pulled the cushion back, it had gone.

“Oh my goodness” went straight through my mind, while hoping it hadn’t gone under my covers into the dark to have an undisturbed sleep. I gingerly lifted the next pillow and there it was, in all its glory. Sat perfectly still and waiting to be caught.

With no hesitation, I scooped it up and trapped it to have a good look at it. It had a bulbous abdomen a bit like a wasp, well very like a wasp actually. And a black head with its front feelers waving about in desperation. As I always do, I took it outside where Kevin was, who remarked about it being another intruder!

Super Scooper

What I would do without my scooper I don’t know as I don’t like killing anything. Not spiders, flies, the lot, out they all go. But there was an exception the other day when one was stuck, half in and out with its legs thrashing wildly.

Off I went to get my scooper, although I didn’t hold much hope out of it getting the blighter. The scooper is brilliant on carpets, bedding and all the soft things, but not as clever on hard floors. Anyway, I had a go at scooping it up but pulled half of it out onto the floor in a sort of squashed mess of orangey looking goo.

I picked it up and got rid of it (not with my fingers) and out it went. I was thinking of having a little funeral for it but I thought that was going too far. They just shouldn’t keep coming into the house should they. They are like Lemmings and seem to want to create mass suicide by keep coming back!

Insect Days Continue…

However onto my next story about insect days.

I was watering my house plants in the kitchen, when all of a sudden, I saw greenfly and babies on one of them. Horrified, I pulled off the obvious leaves and went to get the greenfly spray to zap the destructive little things.

I also noticed another plant that was suspicious looking, so out came the killer. Using sprays isn’t something I like to do. But past experience tells me they can kill your plants in two shakes of the greenfly killer! I tried to open the nozzle but it wasn’t going to spray to save my life.

At which point Kevin ambled into the kitchen so I asked him to get the spray going, which he couldn’t do either. I thought it was just me, but no. So he took it outside in case the whole of the kitchen got sprayed, never mind the bugs! He pressed and squeezed at the rigid container until we decided it needed to be used slightly on its side. So at this point we also decided it would perhaps be best if they were sprayed outside!

It’s not you it’s me…

Kevin showed me what he meant and wouldn’t you know it, I couldn’t get a spot of spray out of that bottle at all. By this time, he’d gone down the garden, so I shouted him back to show him how feeble I am, lol. So then he decided to unscrew the top and let some air in, hoping that would get enough air in to spray with. Wow, it worked. So he left a happy me, spraying for all of two seconds, when it stopped…

Back he had to come again. With me feeling very much like a useless wimp, he decided to put the plants on the top of the red bin to make them easier to spray. Would you believe it, in spite of there not being a breath of wind, some came from somewhere and literally covered me in greenfly spray!

Now we all know the musical hall jokes, where the son in law is trying to get rid of the mother in law. Well, I did think that he could have used a stronger poison if he was trying to end my days!

But by this time, I’d had a good soaking so went back into the kitchen to get washed and dried. Kevin was shouting ‘Chrissie, do your chest and arms as well’. I think he must have been worried about the spray getting into his dinner or something. It was a sight to behold though, me wafting my arms in the air when he started spraying, while being covered in a fine mist of it. I did see the funny side which is a good job, but it was just another morning of insect days in our mad house!
