I wonder if you feel like us and are fed up to the back-teeth of being bombarded with sport, as we have been over the last three weeks. Kevin likes to watch a bit of different sport so he’s not too bothered. But us three, well I can only say we turn the channels over!
It wouldn’t be as bad but we’ve been bombarded with sport most of the day on two if not three channels. We haven’t finished with the football, but we’ve had tennis and a bit of cricket thrown in for good measure.
A Life being Bombarded with Sport
When my dad was a young lad he played football for our town and always enjoyed the sport.
But I have bad memories of Saturday afternoon, when my dad an avid fan, would have the house in silence while he watched as though someone had died. If we so much as spoke, he sent a well aimed slipper in our direction. Then came the results at Saturday tea time. Again, it all had to be silent, making us wonder if his hearing was up to scratch. I grew to hate the sound of commentators and their yelling voices – to me it signalled quiet-as-the-grave – or else.
He did the football pools every Saturday. Plus a bit of spot the ball competition thrown in for good measure, just in case he didn’t win the pools. The top prize was £75,000 pounds which was like millions in those days. Something you could always dream of, but didn’t get.
Winning the Pools
He did have some small wins, but once he won the princely amount of £65.00 which to him was riches. Especially as he worked his back off, seven days a week and shifts at that, for a poor wage. He was thrilled to bits and I can’t remember what he did with the money, but I was pleased for him in spite of being on silent mode for the bulk of Saturday!
There was one jackpot winner that I can recall and that was Viv Richards. Do you remember her? She won the £75,000 and wow, what a woman. She wasn’t well off at all and to say it went to her head, well that was putting it mildly.

Her first words were practically “I’m going to spend, spend and spend” and my did she do just that. She lived life on the fast lane of the M1 shall we say, going through the money like a dose of salts. By but she didn’t half make it crack.
Of course she found the friends she didn’t know about, and anyone that could cadge something off her. To cut a long story short, it all went sour and she ended up penniless, with all her ‘friends’ melting away. I think at the time it taught us that money isn’t everything if that’s what happened to her.
Well Done to England!
I have to say though, I was interested – and pleased – with the outcome of the Germany and England match. Like lots of others I said that Germany would give them a licking, as they have every other time since 1966. That was the year we got married, so I won’t forget that year.
World Cup Stamps
They brought out special stamps out for the world cup, something we didn’t have in Britain. Our stamps were all boring (sorry Your Majesty) Queen’s heads in different colours for each price. We actually bought a new set of the World Cup stamps and I managed to retrieve some from the envelopes where I worked. I suppose it’s possible that they might be worth something today.
Will we win again?
I just hope they go through to the final as they do seem to be a good team. Let’s face it the previous England team hasn’t been up to much, considering that they get a fortune for kicking a ball round. Sometimes Kevin and I have watched bits and it’s been so obvious how they put on a poor show most of the time. Jane marvels as to how I know what’s what on sports. But having been forced fed on every sport known to man with my brother or dad, I didn’t have much choice, did I.
Funny Story from Rabbit Towers
I must just tell you this before I finish. Jane is out all day today (Thursday) over in St. Anne’s with meetings and things. She’d even had a go at the new Adventure Golf…

While I haven’t been any good at standing with my bad leg, she’s been ironing instead of me. It makes me feel so guilty being off my feet as I’ve always been the housekeeper come chef, bottle washer, cleaner, physician, psychiatrist – if you get the drift. Us mum’s are, aren’t we. But I’m beaten, so I can’t do what I used to do and ironing isn’t for me at the moment.
Dashing away…
So would you believe, our lovely thoughtful Kevin got the ironing board out. After asking how to use it (as we have an iron with a tank that steams) off he went. I did ask hubby if he would like to try, and would you know he disappeared to wash the pots – without another word!
It’s about only the second time in 30 years that Kevin has ironed, so they’ve not done bad. He’s just so thoughtful. He knows that when the eagle does land (Jane) she’ll be exhausted, having been out from before 9am and working since 5am. I bet a lot of people would like a Kevin, but ours isn’t for sale!
