We are not Amused!

I haven’t had a bit of a rant for a long time. As they say ‘we are not amused’ and I feel a bit in the mood for one, so here I go!

As I’m sort of ‘laid up’ after my recent illnesses, my eyes have become quite square as I’ve watched such a lot of TV. Well, I’ve not been able to do much else with my stupid body. I saw a picture of the Queen and thought I looked just like her – bent over. As she’s 95 it’s not surprising, but to have it sprung on me at a much younger age isn’t funny.

We are not Amused!

One minute my back was fairly straight and now in the space of a few months, I’m bent like the Queen!

I’m not amused as her ancestor used to say (Queen Victoria). But I’m stuck with compressed spine fractures for good so I’ll have my nose pointing at the floor now.

Heaven help me if there’s something in the way, because I’ll be crashing into something I shouldn’t! I can’t walk so much in the house unaided, although I am improving. When I was younger I always thought a zimmer frame seemed to make an old person older. Now I’m using one, plus plenty of other aids. But I’m determined to get walking on my own, no matter how long it takes.

When I do eventually go out and anyone I know sees me, just give me a shout or a prod to let me know you are there as I probably won’t see you!

Back on Track…

I’ve gone wandering off the point again, but my brain cells (what few are left) seem to do a diversion easily. So let me begin with what I was going to say, eventually!

Back to TV and my videos. I mentioned this a long time ago but it’s still happening. If one thing gets on my nerves, it’s watching TV films etc, and they’ve got the lights on all over the house, even in full blazing sunshine. Americans are the worst but it seems that it’s spreading over here too. We’re in an age where fuel is getting harder to get than ever, what with one thing or another. But there they are with lights blazing in the day time.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been careful about things like that. I’d be seen switching lights of in the kitchen that had been left on when everyone’s wandered off but left them blazing. Hubby and Kevin are the culprits by and large.

We are not amused at wasting energy

Hubby also fills the kettle nearly full every time, in spite of having been told a trillion times to only fill what he needs. I keep pointing out that he’s paying for electric that he needn’t pay for, but he gets this glassy eyed look as he switches me off. Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Something else that gets me is the outcry over one of the illuminations displays on the prom. I’m not trying to be contentious or start World War Three as Putin is doing a good job of that. Of course I’m talking about the tableau with Red Indians on it.

It’s been on show for many years as far as I can remember, but it seems that members of the Chickasaw nation complained about its use of the caricatures. The tableau is sixty years old and to my knowledge no complaints had been made, until I don’t know how many members of the tribe decided to complain.

Discriminatory?

Their argument is that it shows six tomahawk-wielding Native American Indians in war bonnets, dancing round a totem pole. So a letter has arrived saying that Blackpool is not promoting itself as a welcoming community, and supports race and discrimination!

When it happened the council made all the right noises and agreed to review it for next year. They aim to see into another one that celebrates American culture with input from the network based in the UK. What! I didn’t even know that the Chickasaw nation were in Britain, but my personal opinion would be to stop being so touchy. Really, we’ve got to sixty years of having them as part of the tableaus without a moan from anyone.

I for one grew up playing cowboys and Indians with my friends. Me in my cowgirl outfit and gun and others in Indian get up. There were and still are films made of American Indians. When I was younger and loved to watch them it certainly didn’t make me feel that Indians were a lesser race. We were play acting what we’d seen on TV. But racism was the last thing on my mind.

We are not amused – it’s a kids toy!

Along with taking golliwogs off the market and Robinsons jams. You collected jam jar labels to get a brooch of the said thing. The first thing hubby bought Jane when she was born was a little golliwog, and so cute it was. Thinking we were making fun of coloured people was the very last thing on our minds. It was a toy for a newborn. She also had baby dolls (stereotyping housewives) and Sindy – and she’s a bad role model if ever there was one. I personally think it’s sad that so many things have been abolished over the years in case someone is offended. It’s got out of hand.

I don’t care if people are pink, brown, black, purple-with-yellow spots or singing war chants, it wouldn’t make me racist towards them. If anything, I have the attitude that we’re all people under the outer skin, never mind what colour the top layer is. There’s good and bad in all races, so for me, the Indian tableau should be allowed to stay.

It’s part of their history that there was fighting between Indians and white people, as the Indians had their land stolen from them. If anything, add something to explain the theme. But not to take down an innocent tableau that’s been there for sixty years without a complaint. A bit more tolerance and understanding wouldn’t go amiss, I don’t know what you think!

That’s my rant over for today, I think I must have wanted to let steam off, so I did!!!
