Here’s the randomest of random blogs for you today. What do dust mites do?
Do you ever think about the dust mites that live in our beds, cushions, carpets? You name it, but they seem to like to take up residence in our homes. The whole idea makes me cringe, especially when you see a blown up photo of them and all their legs. Just the sheer look of them makes my skin crawl.
By now, you’re probably wondering why I’m talking about them. Everyone has them don’t they, even though we like to think they don’t exist. The information about them is endless, to the point that I get into bed and wonder if they are showing their ugly little faces, or whatever it is they do. Which begs the question, what do dust mites do?
Why am I asking What do dust mites do?
The thought of millions of them is horrible to me, crawling in our bedding and pillows, yuk.
Well, the point is, that I’ve had a nasty blocked nose for several weeks now. It doesn’t seem to want to leave me and I’m starting to get really fed up of my constant sniffling. I don’t know what the others think, but I’m getting on my own nerves. So I must be getting on theirs, if you know what I mean!
So it occurred to me that I might be allergic to… dust mites.
Anyway, looking for ways to get rid of these walking nightmares, I turned to our friend, Google, and saw there loads and loads of different remedies.
Now anyone that knows me knows I won’t kill anything if I can help it. Flies, spiders, bugs no matter how horrible, they get scooped up and put outside and told not to come back or else! I know this sounds daft, but the thought of millions of these things being killed and on their backs with their feet in the air makes me shudder. After all, what happens to all the bodies when they have clapped their clogs?
So I’m not especially keen on killing dust mites either. I imagine millions of them piling up inside my pillows and bedding, oh urgh, perish the thought. However, I carried on looking, as I’m desperate to get rid of my blocked nose, so I read on and on.
All sorts of remedies for dust mites
There were all sorts of remedies, starting with chemical sprays, which are poisonous, I believe. Plus herbal sorts of things too as I read on and on. You know what it’s like, they give you two thousand answers to everything and it’s up to you to decide which you want.
Anyway, as I read, and after a lot of deliberation, I realised that the chemical sprays had to be sprayed all over the bedding etc and left to dry in the air. I didn’t fancy having heaven knows what chemicals on my stuff.
Carrying on reading I found some others, then had to decide which one. I settled on sachets that you put among your bedding, carpets or wherever you feel like putting them. After all, the mites infest everything in our homes don’t they but you can’t cover every little thing. As I understand it, the mites come out munching in your bed and the herbal stuff makes them move. The trouble is, I don’t know where they move to when they can’t stand the smell of the herbs anymore, that’s up for debate.
I put in my order for some herbal ones and waited for them to come. They all the world look like very big tea bags, I joke not, with a smell to match. They smell of herbal shops, if you’ve ever been in one that is. But at least it said that the strong smell vanishes quickly, which I’m pleased to say it did. I didn’t fancy breathing that up my nose all night thank you very much!
I duly put one under my pile of pillows as instructed, and another at the bottom of the bed between the mattress and fitted sheet.
What do Dust Mites do Next?
That done, I stood back waiting for a mass Exodus of them. With their little suitcases and their bags of dead skin in case they get hungry while waiting for a new place to carry on living.
I did wonder what on earth happened to the pile of bodies that should be left behind if the sachets did their job, but I dread to think what the answer would be.
Derek did ask what the smell was, and what were extra large tea bags doing in the bed. He looked rather blankly at me as if to say ‘she’s finally lost the plot’. Perhaps I did a long time ago, if my memory is anything to go by.
The trouble is, that after changing them monthly, my nose is still blocked solid. That’s in spite of any remedy I try. I’m thinking of calling Dyna Rod in. Maybe they’ll have something that does the trick!
And I’m still not sure what the point of dust mites is either!
