Croquet is a lawn sport where plastic or wooden composite balls are hit with a mallet. The aim is that they go through hoops in a grass playing court. The game of croquet was first described in a set of rules by Isaac Spratt in 1856, lodged with the Stationers Company in London.
Today, there are several variations of croquet- two forms of which are association croquet and golf croquet. Both have internationally agreed rules, played all around the world. It’s even been played in the summer Olympics – in 1900 and again in 1904 with an American variation.
Fylde Croquet Club
Fylde Croquet Club is located at South Shore Lawn Tennis Club on Midgeland Rd off Progress Way in Blackpool, where they have three great lawns.
The Club are always looking for new members to play a fantastic game that never seems to get a mention – croquet is a fabulous sport very much ignored by the media. People are always amazed by just how engaging it is.
You don’t need to be young and fit, and it is great fun! You also don’t need any special equipment or clothes. What you do need are proper flat shoes and comfy clothing – ideally in layers.
Fylde Croquet is a friendly club with social events too. And they were delighted to win the North West Federation of Croquet in June 2016.
