Father’s Day is the time to celebrate dads everywhere, and is held on the third Sunday in June. The celebration honours fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It’s the male version of similar celebrations like Mother’s Day, and in some countries, Grandparents Day.

Celebrate Father’s Day on the Fylde Coast
Celebrated all around the world, Father’s Day is a chance for people to get in touch with dads they don’t see very often, or just simply to spoil them for helping out all year round.
What will you do for your father this year? It’s customary to buy a card and gift – even if men can be a bit harder to buy for than women! Cards always show those traditional male pass-times – fishing, football, golf, drinking beer and DIY! But your dad probably has more unique hobbies than that, so why not get him something special?
Father’s Day lunch probably doesn’t pack restaurants out as much as Mother’s Day does, but it’s still a busy time of year. If you’re thinking of taking your dad out you’d better book it early! Hopefully the weather will be kind and you can enjoy a walk on the seafront afterwards and burn off some of those calories.
Things to Do
The special man in your life might be a young dad, or a dad to young people, or maybe he’s dad to a pet! It’s a chance to thank the special men in your life for what they do on a daily basis. There’s one thing for certain, you won’t be short of somewhere to go and something to do here on the Fylde Coast.

Hand Made means More
Most people are good at something so why don’t you use your skills to make your dad something nice year? If you’re a reasonable cook you could bake a cake, buns or biscuits. Maybe you could paint him a picture or make a card.
The time, effort and thought that goes into hand made gifts is worth far more than the pounds spent in your local shop. Why don’t you try it this year?
Father’s Day Traditions and History
As is customary at Visit Fylde Coast, we’ve taken a look back into the past of this tradition, wondering where it all began.
Many modern Father’s Day celebrations have their roots in religion. And on 19 November many countries celebrate International Men’s Day.
St Joseph’s Day on 19 March is how they celebrate in Catholic countries of Europe – they’ve been doing it this way since the Middle Ages. It’s been celebrated since it’s founding in 1910 in the United States. Lithuania marks it as a recognised public holiday, as do some parts of Spain. While Sikhs celebrate on 29 December, the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh.
Father’s Day in the UK appeared after the end of the second world war so it doesn’t have a long tradition like Mother’s Day does.
