They’re as much a part of the British seaside as sticks of rock and seagull cries! Beach huts look pretty as a part of the landscape and they’re a great retreat for a day at the coast. Take a look at where you’ll find them here on the Fylde – and a bit more about them in days gone by.
Beach Huts
Today, you’ll find beach huts at both ends of the Fylde Coast, but sadly not in the middle at Blackpool. There’s privately rented ones and rent-by-the-day ones – take a look!
Fleetwood Beach Huts
There are two different designs of beach huts at Marine Beach, Fleetwood. There’s the pastel candy-coloured type in the photo at the top of this page and a modern incarnation. They’re privately rented out on long leases, by owners Wyre Council.
It was back in 1934 when Fleetwood’s lower promenade and the nearby beach huts opened.

St Annes Beach Huts
Beach huts came to St Annes way, way back in the day. The first appeared in 1882 to the North of the Pier. Fast forward 131 years… to find new huts to the South of Pleasure Island which can be hired by the day.
Beach Huts in Days Gone By
St Annes Beach Huts of 1882 had a good innings – they always built things to last back then! It wasn’t until the 1980s when they were finally demolished. Always built next to the beach they’re in a prime position for a lovely summer’s day. The flip side is that they always get a battering from stormy weather. No matter how robust they are, maintenance is always going to be a headache!
Of course it was the old bathing machines which went on to become the beach huts of today. Those little sheds with pointy roofs and big wheels carried people (especially ladies) modestly into the water.
By 1884 Blackpool seafront was full of wheeled beach huts, some of them also provided dresses and drawers (long bloomers!) to the bathers. Emblazoned with big graphics on the side – they advertised things like Jones Sewing Machines.
Now, firmly set on dry land, they’re somewhere to change, shelter from the weather and enjoy a brew! Do you remember the ones at Cleveleys (below), before the sea wall was rebuilt?
