John Barnett – High Sherriff of Lancashire

In 2018 a successful business entrepreneur from Blackpool officially took up office as the new High Sheriff of Lancashire.

John Barnett is a well known and very popular local figure here on the Fylde Coast. Not only as an astute businessman but a thoroughly nice man at that – we’ve known him for many years. Among many other things, John was probably best known for being the founder of Radio Wave, where he continued to hold the post of Chairman for many years after retiring.

In a speech to guests at the installation ceremony at County Hall in Preston on Wednesday 13 April 2018, John Barnett MBE DL pledged to do what he can for the people of Blackpool and Lancashire in the coming 12 months.

John said: “Whether it is helping individuals to find work or boosting tourism, attracting more visitors to Lancashire, or supporting the many unpaid carers; it is important to me that the role of High Sheriff has a relevance and importance in the 21st Century.

“I can only achieve this through the help and support of the business sector, working closely with the voluntary and public sector.”

The role is carried out on a voluntary basis and the High Sheriff does not receive any salary or expenses and funds the role personally. The office of High Sheriff is held for a year.

Although many of the powers of the High Sheriff have been reduced over the years, the holder still performs many important functions in the county.

At the installation ceremony, the Queen’s Commission was read by David Cam the Under Sheriff in the presence of three Commissioners, the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and other dignitaries.
