Back into Lockdown Again

Social Distancing Strikes

Oh my goodness, the world is consumed by Coronavirus. Social distancing strikes and we’re all in for a shock!

There are pictures of cleared out supermarkets all over social media. There are bare shelves all over the country, and a friend in America has shown the same thing there. Empty shelves.

The sight of all this and people fighting over a last pack of toilet rolls in Australia and being arrested, it’s enough to put the wind up anyone! The sight of all these shelves, staring at us and empty, makes me wonder what happens when we can’t buy anything? How do you eat etc? All this is surely contributing to the panic that people are feeling.

Too much knowledge

Sometimes too much knowledge can be a dangerous thing, don’t you think. It’s OK telling us that people are dying daily and all the rest of the things to cheer us up, but what do we do if us oldies are kept in isolation in our homes for months?

We have people with us that can go out and get things, although they could bring viruses back, so what do we do about that? Someone has said that Tesco have a three week waiting slot for home deliveries – and that was before the panic.

Social distancing strikes the over 70s

How are ‘oldies’ supposed to cope if they are shut in with nobody to help them, it must be very scary. The list of problems being created is endless – and scaring us to death! Are measures being put into place to sort out what the house-interred people are supposed to do when they run out of food and all the other things that we all need?

I personally think that the media isn’t helping with all this panic buying and reaction. I’ve been watching the BBC, and as they do with every subject they report on, they’re the voice of doom and gloom. On their Points of View kind of show, several people said the same as us, why do they make it so fearsome and use words like ‘lockdown’ instead of lesser scary words.

It sounds so martial to me, as though everybody will be locked in their homes and never see daylight again. They all said that the BBC always have to make everything sound worse that it is, whether it’s Brexit, or whatever the subject.

Before Social Distancing Strikes…

Anyway, I had a bit of light relief from it all, when I went for my third visit to the dentist last week.

I went into the surgery to be met by my dentist holding his arm up in a defence-like pose, which did make me wonder if I was having a Karate lesson in between having my teeth sorted.

No, that wasn’t it. After staring at him as though he’d gone mad, he must have realised he was acting a bit strange. But then he explained what he was doing. He always shakes my hand when I get there and again when I’m going out. As he explained, this is the new way of handshaking so that we didn’t touch bare hands.

Better than rubbing noses

I was grinning all over my face as I put my arm up and we banged arms and elbows in this new form of greeting. The same happened when I came out so there we were banging elbows, but at least it wasn’t like rubbing noses like Eskimos do, that would have been going a bit too far for me.

He certainly cheered me up I must say, although I am due for my final fourth visit next week so whether I will be allowed to go I’m not sure with all this keeping-you-at-home business. He did say that a lot of people had already cancelled last week as they didn’t want to risk catching germs.

It was very busy in Cleveleys on Friday last week, I must say. There certainly were a lot of people in the town going about their business, which was nice to see.

None of us know where it will end up and what will happen. We just have to go with the flow and wait and see. But I personally would prefer not being scared to death by the media which is what is happening now.

We can only hope that we don’t end up on the virus scrap-heap for sickly oldies, as I’d certainly be the first  in the queue, that’s for sure.
