The Saga of my Teeth

Saga of My Teeth

The saga of my teeth carried on, after last Tuesdays effort of sitting there for ages having a tooth filled. The rest of the day was uneventful, that is until after tea, when a throbbing sensation started in the tooth.

The Saga of my Teeth, Tuesday to Thursday…

OK I told myself, it was a very deep filling and done without an injection. He told me I wouldn’t feel it, which I didn’t. I found out later that the root was well and truly dead, although it didn’t feel like it to me. As the evening wore on, the pain cranked up and I thought that it was just the filling settling down. Oh no it wasn’t.

By Wednesday morning, after a broken night’s sleep with awful pain, it just carried on and on and then some. The pain was excruciating I have to say, and that’s the only way I can describe it. There I was thinking, it will settle soon, ever hopeful me, but no, on and on and on it went, even through strong painkillers. It was relentless. By Thursday, I was swinging off the chandelier, that was after I carried the steps to reach it. I’ve never known toothache like it. By Thursday night, I thought enough is enough, I have to sort this out one way or another.

The Saga of my Teeth… Friday

A phone call to the dentist on Friday morning saw me going to Fleetwood. My dentist in Cleveleys wasn’t in that day. I must admit I did wonder what was going to happen on this second visit, and I was about to find out.

I saw a lovely male dentist. That was after Jane dropped me off while she parked the car, and I managed to go in the wrong door. Talk about being stupid. I couldn’t go through the main door I went through a side door which banged straight into two startled receptionists, who I think thought they were going to be attacked. I nearly knocked one of them out of her swivel chair, and talk about feeling daft. It’s just like me to do something so silly, especially when Jane then came walking in through the front door!

Anyway, I have to say that everyone, without exception, was really really nice and friendly. It’s what you need when you feel you are going to step off a very high cliff. The dentist’s assistant was lovely too I have to say, as was the man himself.

That questionnaire

Once again I had to fill my medical questionnaire in and go through it with him to make sure he knew exactly what was wrong with me. I was just hoping he had the time to go through all that before he dropped asleep. Eventually, we got down to the nitty gritty of why I was there, while trying not to roll about on the floor with pain.

Then came the tests to see how painful it was. Tapping on the tooth with a metal thing got the required effect, out shot my left leg into the air as though I was trying to do the Can Can from a sitting down position. This happened again and then when he put a freezing probe onto it, out came the left leg again. Why it was just one leg I’m not sure, but I didn’t think I could get it so high!

Anyway, I think he got the message that I wasn’t kidding, so then I was told about all the things that could go wrong, I was ready for getting out fast. Then he offered me canal root treatment which I flatly refused after having it done before. Jane also had it done more recently, which took hours and hours and several visits. Even after all that and spending a fortune she still ended up having it out. He kept saying ‘are you sure’ and in my best firm voice I said ‘yes’.

Off with it’s head

After offering a few other alternatives which meant carrying on with the pain, I settled for an extraction because as I said, at my age if anyone wants to look at a gap and complain, well so be it. I think by then he got the message that I wasn’t having any prolonged treatment and several dental visits so after another x ray, we came to an agreement that I had had enough and was getting rid!

He did ask me if I wanted to ask my daughter to come in and see what she thought, so in she came. I’ve never ever had anyone in with me before so it was really nice to have her there, which might not have been for her as she is a bit squeamish! In went the injections, all four of them and the two in the roof of my mouth were particularly painful.

After having told me how bits of the tooth could travel to my sinus and lots more things, he took his time and carefully loosened it all round the edge then pulled it out. Meanwhile Jane was watching from a comfy red leather settee, and managing not to faint probably. But she was busy taking my picture, sadist or what!

After the deed is done...
After the deed is done…

Anyway, eventually I got home thankful that my ordeal was over. He was right though, I am still getting pain in my face which can happen and take a week or two to settle. I have to say, what could have been an awful ordeal was made a lot better by a lovely dentist and assistant who took me through every stage of what he was doing very carefully.

Jane, laughing all over her face, said I should have a bravery sticker, and lo and behold, I got one. The assistant said I deserved it after all that I had gone through. So, I’m the proud owner of a lovely sticker although I resisted the temptation to stick it on my coat for all the world to see!

And, I also managed to go out through the proper door when I left the building. Wasn’t I clever.
