Trip to the dentists

Trip to the Dentists

What a peculiar day I had, or afternoon should I say, with a trip to the dentists on Tuesday! It’s a good job it wasn’t Wednesday or I might have got lost in the fog, literally. It was a pea-souper here and the sea vanished. Wonder where it got to!

Trip to the Dentists

Anyway, I thought I would share my dental adventure with you, and how I got on in one of my favourite places, ha if you believe that you’ll believe anything.

I did mention a couple of weeks ago that the full side of a double tooth fell off, and I wasn’t even eating at the time. It must have felt decrepit, a bit like me. I can only assume that I swallowed it because I wasn’t aware of it going down. I didn’t spit it out so presumably it went down the hatch! But I certainly wasn’t going to see what happened at the other end!!

Left with the remaining old filling I’d had previously, I booked an appointment. When the outer tooth fell off it looked a bit like that man off the Bond films. The great hulk with a mouthful of metal teeth. At least I wasn’t huge like him. The two weeks went round in a flash. One minute I’d booked the appointment and the next I was sitting in the chair.

Get me out of here!

Those of you who know me will know that I suffer from extreme claustrophobia. When I went in the other surgery which I hadn’t been in before which is tiny I thought ‘oh my goodness’ and resisted the urge to run out screaming.

Apparently it was time to update my records to see if things had changed, yes they had I’m older, so just get on with it. He was interested in my diet, you name it he asked it. It was a bit like the red book of This is Your Life where they recap on your past, but eventually we got that out of the way.

Then came the decision where to put me in his very comfy chair. I told him I couldn’t lie flat or my head would probably roll off when I stood up due to neck pain. So up I came, one angle at a time. It was a bit like being on a ride at the Pleasure Beach. Eventually we decided between us where the angle of the chair should be for what I thought was the treatment to start.

No it wasn’t. More asking which tooth had fallen off, which was quite obvious to him, especially when he saw metal mickey staring back at him. Then came the crochet hook to have a good old poke into my other teeth with hieroglyphics telling his assistant what was what, in terms I’d never heard before.

Trip to the dentists…and a ride in the chair

Eventually that stopped and after a good old prod at my broken tooth to see if it was painful, we got down to business. Off we went in the chair again, adjusting it by one level, another and another and so on until he was comfy and I was.

He told me he could repair it, which was music to my ears. I just wanted to get done and get out of there. He then asked me if I needed an injection to which I gave a horrified ‘I don’t like drilling without a ‘jab’ but he assured me I wouldn’t feel it. Looking sceptically at him, I thought I would probably kick out and hit him in the teeth.

Anyway, He started drilling and drilling and drilling, until I thought he was going to come out through my head. He was right though, for some reason I didn’t feel it, thank goodness. Although he kept saying ‘let your mouth relax’ which I thought I was doing. Then he told me to be looser, looser. I didn’t get it as by this time my mouth was loose, nearly closed actually. Which was better for me as I always end up with jaw ache from keeping it wide open.

Eventually…the filling

After a few more ‘looser, looser’s’ he started filling the tooth with a lovely white filling, which is what they mostly use nowadays. Then came layer after layer of building up the ‘stuff’, with a screen in front of me many times while he used the UV light to harden the white. Then the sculpting began to make it look like a real tooth, and my was he careful.

He made sure he could get floss between the tooth and the next one as he patiently filed bits off until he was happy. The only trouble was that I had a sucker thing to irrigate and take the water out of my mouth, and at one time I was waving my arms about frantically as it was going down my throat. The dentist kept saying ‘its only water’ which it might have been. But when I told him I was drowning he asked the assistant to move the irrigator/sucker thing. Maybe didn’t want a corpse in his chair, not a good look is it.

Eventually my trip to the dentists was over and done, but not completely, as I have to go back for a scrape and polish so that will be interesting. I have to say that I’ve never had such a thorough going over from any dentists. He took a lot of care, explained what he was doing each step of the way and all in all one of the best set of tooth filling I’ve had. Even so, I was glad when my one hour and fifteen minutes was up and could go back home for a cuppa.

Punchline:

The day after I was in agony with my neck from sitting in the chair so long, fixed in one position. Then by tea time the tooth ache kicked in. I can only say it’s like the pain that Jane described when she had an abscess – it’s agony. By bedtime I felt rough and yesterday (Friday) I felt ill! I can only assume it’s a coincidence… I’ll keep you posted.
