Perpetual Motion…

I’m not joking, we get onto some funny things and topics in our house. For example, there we were having five minutes chattering after lunch as we always do, and goodness knows how we got onto it. But Kevin started talking about perpetual motion.

Of course, we’re onto physics now, which is one science I didn’t do at school, even though I’ve always had a love of science. But they both did when they were at school. Of course, there was lots of laughter as they tried to outdo each other with the explanation of how it works for us dinosaurs who didn’t know the ins and outs but have a vague understanding of what it is.

All of a sudden, hubby, who had previously been absorbed in his iPad as usual, started to drone on and quote the real definition of it. It was something to do with you can’t have it unless you are in a vacuum, or something to that effect. I asked Kevin why he was talking about it. Apparently his father used to have him and his brother and sister sitting in a row, while he went on and on and on about perpetual motion. Plus other strange things that you normally wouldn’t tell your children about. So off we went having another good laugh, knowing that what his father got up to would test the strongest of minds. I was on the point of saying that I wished I was in a vacuum to shut them all out!

What is Perpetual Motion?

Perpetual motion is the motion of bodies that continues forever in an unperturbed system. A perpetual motion machine is a hypothetical machine that can do work infinitely without an external energy source. This kind of machine is impossible, as it would violate the first or second law of thermodynamics.

Perpetual Motion and Star Wars

Of course Star Wars has been the main topic of conversation for a couple of weeks. Well it is a change from the virus and the elections isn’t it. So off they went again, on and on about that for the ninetieth time. Where is my vacuum when I need it? Then someone asked what the theme tune for Star Wars is. As you know I’m not a fan of the programme nor are the rest of us, it’s just never appealed to us. But Jane, always to be relied on to give us a laugh, started off singing. Except that she was singing the Dallas theme tune, not Star Wars.

Well talk about laugh, it kept me going all day, especially with the look on her face when we did start laughing. She looked as though ‘what’s wrong with that’. I must admit when hubby played it on the iPad (his best friend) it did sound a bit Dallas-ish. So we soothed her ruffled feathers and stopped laughing at her. Do you people out there have daft conversations amongst yourselves like we do? Or are we just plain daft on our own?

Never a Dull Moment

There’s never a dull moment here, and we all have plenty of laughs at one another. It must be miserable to be stuck with people that you can’t get on with, don’t you think. I don’t think I could just suddenly have someone descend on me that I’d not lived with. But as we’ve been together for more than 30 years, it’s just a way of life for us. They certainly keep us on our toes!

Kevin came for the weekend one Christmas and that was that. So all you out there, don’t let relatives or friends move in on you! I’m only joking, I think everyone should do what they want regardless of what others think. We certainly had a lot of funny looks at the time and no doubt there was plenty of ‘that won’t work‘ talk. But most of the people who said that ended up with broken marriages while we’re still going strong, so we must be doing something right.

Unusual or Not?

It’s strange though, because in lots of cultures families live together. They’re brought up to believe that you look after each other. The Chinese for example, in India and Pakistan and many more countries, would think it odd if you didn’t live this way. But I can tell you that, as a fringe benefit, it doesn’t half make the cost of living cheaper!

We share our bills and the cost of things that we all use. So when it comes to rates and energy bills for example, it makes it a lot easier to swallow when you only pay half. It sure will be a shock to them when we aren’t here though!

All in all, I think it has to be something that you do from early days. We’d probably get on one another’s nerves too if we’d not lived together before. For us, we share the sad and the happy times together and are there for each other. Could you live with your family? Leave a comment below…
