One of those Days

I think we’ve had the funny-half-hour on these last few days. We seem to get dafter and dafter in our house. Saturday was one of those days where nothing went right…

One of those Days – Problem 1

First, the internet went off. Really off, not a bit off, so that was awkward until Kevin got it going again. Jane, who gets up at about 5.30am to work while all is quiet, was sitting there twiddling her thumbs. This was while waiting for Kevin to rouse from his beauty sleep! Eventually he surfaced (he does like his bed does our Kevin) and set to sorting it out with Jane saying ‘have you done it yet’ until it was ‘done’.

One of those Days – Problem 2

Then a bit later on, she managed to cut her finger, quite badly might I add. The first thing I heard was a lot of swearing then this moaning like an animal in pain. The moans got louder and louder until I thought I’d better go and see who had done what – a frequent event in our house. There she was, bent over the kitchen sink as far as she could, moaning like a banshee, stamping her right foot on the floor. This while holding her hand under the tap, with her finger dripping blood into the sink.

Of course, being ‘mum’ and chief first aider, I sprung into action and tried to find out what she’d done. They all come to me when something medical happens. Believe or not, I am the calmest person to deal emergencies in this house.

Back in the day…

Just digressing, one of my friends who lived near me many years ago had a little boy the same age as Jane. She would come round to my house if her son had a spell in his finger, because she couldn’t bear to go poking about in his skin with a needle. She’d ring me up and say ‘can I come round he’s got a spell in his finger’. I usually managed to get it without him yelling the place down as he would have done for his mummy. So I was always first port of call to sort him out!

Anyway, digression over and back to my daughter who was still hanging over the sink. I was straight to the Elastoplast drawer – we have all our first aid kit in there so that everyone knows where to find things – rummaging around for the plasters and antiseptic cream. You don’t want an infection setting in do you!!

Comedy Capers

By now, her poor finger looked like a purple stick with a slit in the skin, and still pouring blood! I got the Elastoplast open eventually, after about an hour of trying to get the wrapping off, well a bit of an exaggeration but you know what I mean.

I dried her finger as best as I could with some kitchen roll and then got the cream out to put on the plaster. Nothing came out, wouldn’t you just know it. So I squeezed and squeezed and suddenly, a great lump of it shot across the kitchen onto everything but the plaster.

Of course Jane, who by now didn’t know whether to laugh or cry with pain, let out a roar of laughter which carried on and on. Well it did at least take her mind off her pain laughing at her good old mum! Eventually the deed was done and I managed to sort the cream out from the kitchen cupboards. It’s a wonder there was any left in the tube by the time I’d finished as it went all over the place.

Meanwhile her finger was still bleeding through the plasters so she had to keep replacing them. But as you all know, plasters are notorious for dropping off in two minutes so, to get round it, she’s been wearing a disposable glove. They’re another good Covid side-effect – and really handy to help you to get on with your jobs!

One of those Days – Problem 3

The next thing to follow was a catastrophe with a client of ours. We’ve worked for them for many years and run their business in France. She rang Kevin having a fit because her emails had all disappeared, which is not good when you are an Estate Agent methinks.

She was having a dickey-fit so Kevin, our knight in shining armour, got stuck in and spent all day Saturday sorting it out for her. Not our fault I believe. Some of you may know that the number thirteen isn’t my favourite number as something always goes wrong then. It’s uncanny how many things have happened on the thirteenth for all of us. And guess what, it was Saturday the thirteenth when all this took place, wouldn’t you just know it.

I think we got through the rest of my unfavourite day eventually and went back to normal life, or whatever is normal in or house!
