I'm here again to tell you of some of the goings on here at our house. I tell you, if you didn’t see the funny side of life you'd cry!

Life Goes On

While the virus carries on, we still have our share of comedians in our house. Well, you’ve got to try and see the funny side, not that there is much on that particular side. But anyway, life goes on, so they say.

We all feel so sad for the families and people who have lost loved ones or are ill with it. Sadly they can’t say that life goes on, can they. We’re staying put here, although there were plenty of cars on the prom on Saturday afternoon. Maybe they watch different programmes to us and don’t know what’s happening, I don’t know, but the police were still coming on.

Life Goes On and the Garden Grows

And where the lovely sunshine went as forecast I also don’t know.

We were deprived of the promised sunshine so we decided to do some gardening on Saturday afternoon. Well they did, but I managed just about five minutes before my arm nearly dropped off at the socket. I suppose it would have been something different to look at wouldn’t it, apart from the virus!

Anyway, back to the garden. As you know the green bin collection has stopped and the local council tips are closed, so what we are supposed to do with all the gardening rubbish I don’t know.

We have a garden shredder that we’ve had for donkeys years must be going on for 25 years or so. Out came the shredder from the shed and guess what, it wasn’t working. Well that was it, Kevin rose to the challenge and literally took the whole thing to pieces. I honestly think if he could do the same to us he would, just to see what’s inside. I hope if he did he wouldn’t get too close to the brain or that might give the game away that there’s not much up there!

Chop, chop, chop

Jane, Derek and I went into the front garden which has got, shall I say ‘overgrown’, due to the lack of time previously. So Derek started clearing the millions of leaves from the borders while Jane did some general tidying up. There is still a lot to do but stomachs and aching joints took us in for tea.

But before we did go in, Kevin joined us to tell us that he couldn’t sharpen the blades and make the shredder work because all the screws and things were so rusted he couldn’t get them out.

We all trooped into the back garden to see what was to do, and when I saw the state of it, I wasn’t long before I said that I thought we should get a new one. Of course, that was like throwing the gauntlet down to Kevin. He looked at me with that deadly glint in his eye that said ‘not likely, I will master it’.

He fetched the vinegar bottle out of the kitchen, which is usually good for loosening things. Then he drowned it in WD40 to the point that it was saturated, but still no luck. We went in to get the tea ready, leaving him with the chisel and bolster trying to prise it off, which of course it didn’t. What he did with all the bits and pieces that covered the entire lawn, I don’t know, but he left it to soak overnight.

Clap for Kevin

The punchline is that he went out on Sunday to have another go at it, and just as I suspected, he managed to get it apart.

Mending the shredder
Mending the shredder

It’s still a rusty old thing, but it’s working for now and at least we can chop up all of our garden waste while there aren’t any bin collections.

So we gave him a round of applause!

Mad Englishmen go out in the Sun

Did you see people, particularly Londoners, out at the weekend in the lovely sunshine (they must have pinched ours) having picnics? It was packed with people in close contact and all the things you do on a normal sunny afternoon, which we found to be unbelievable. It’s true, life goes on, but not as normal for the time being.

Now we’ve all had a strict warning that if people won’t behave they will be on a total ban from going out, and I for one don’t blame them.

We’ve been told not to picnic, flock to the beach to picnic, sunbathe and all the obvious things that could give you an unhealthy dose of virus. What is wrong with these people, mainly the younger end from what I can see. Does it take one of them to die before they say ‘I shouldn’t have gone into close contact, I have been stupid and now my family are left picking up the pieces’ while having probably passed the virus on to goodness knows how many people. It says a lot when you see the graph of cases in London against the rest of the UK.

Walk on the Pavement

When Matt Hancock was talking about people bleating that they haven’t got a park to go and have a walk etc, Jane rose six feet out of her chair and said ‘don’t they have pavements outside their house? Go for a walk on them’.

A lot seem to be trying to pretend they are invincible or something. I just can’t for the life of me see how they are happy with the risk of killing more people than have already died, it beggars belief.

Derek and I haven’t been past the gate. Jane has been no further than the beach outside our house to do your daily videos – and then dodged literally everyone. Kevin is the only one who has been shopping for us. Saturday was the first time I ventured into the front garden for any length of time and it did feel strange having to keep away from people who you would normally have a chat with over the wall.

Well, that’s all for today folks – keep well, keep safe and stay home x
