Back to the dentists

Back to the Dentists

I’ve been back to the dentists again, although I’d like to point out that these aren’t  my gnashers! Before I get onto that, have you all survived storm Jorge? It was pretty bad through the night here on the seafront, but not, I think, as bad as they said it would be. Don’t you think it just seems to go on and on. It makes my head rattle as it whips around the house. I have known it to be much worse, so I’m glad it’s not been!

I’ll say it again, how awful for all the poor people who have been flooded out of their homes. It must be soul destroying. We were saying what we would feel like if it was us, and it would be dire. Imagine losing things you have worked hard to get. Memories, cd’s, photo albums, all your treasured possessions which you can’t ever replace. It’s unbelievable what they must feel like the poor things, watching it all destroyed by something they can’t do a thing about.

Maybe instead of sending money to countries which have openly said they don’t need it, it would be better spent here on flood defences and helping those who are in such a mess. I wouldn’t like to think of sleeping and living surrounded by strangers for goodness knows how long. My heart goes out to them all.

Back to the Dentists

Anyway, onto more cheerful matters, that is of course dependant on what you call cheery or not. My third dental trip happened this week. For those of you who don’t know, I had a tool filled a couple of weeks ago. Then had the most extreme toothache you could ever imagine. After a few days of saying to myself that it wasn’t going away for nobody, I had it taken out.

Last Thursday found me back for my third visit to have a check-up, when the dentist asked me if I wanted a false tooth to go on my existing palate. Now myself, I’m not a big fan of dentists. I mean, how many do like going? Although we have a friend who does, but I don’t. There I was sitting in the chair, having a ride up and down to get comfy, while he discussed what kind of palate I wanted.

I had two milk teeth until I was ever so old, as the adult incisors never came down. They are floating in the top of my gums which I’ve seen on xray. As they’re very near to the front, the idea of having a big gaping gap when I smiled didn’t appeal to me, so when they eventually disintegrated I had a palate made.

Different Dentures

However, back to my story. I discovered last week there are now different kinds of denture you can have.

One option was to have a new double tooth added onto my palate – that was a no-no from me. I’ve never liked the palate I have which makes me look a bit like Dracula. When I said this, the poor man looked at me as though I’d lost my marbles. Although he doesn’t know I already have, he looked as though I was going to get a pint of blood from him!! The colour isn’t quite right either, so I knew it might be option two or three.

The second option was a completely new palate like the one I have, a solid one. The third option is, wait for it, one that has some give in it which makes it more pliable to use. He showed me a sample of what they are like and it seemed a good idea so I decided on that. Apparently they sort of expand sideways to the back of your own teeth to give a good fit.

Then came the picking of the colour with the dentist and his assistant holding various tooth colours in front of my face until they found what they liked.

A Lasting Impression

Next came the fun bit or not, depending on what tickles your fancy. He put what looked like a set of dentures in my mouth, to fill with the ‘stuff’ that makes a cast of your teeth. By this time the chair had been moved to a half-sitting position, which played havoc with my poor neck which is still hurting even now. This was all with the two of them bent double, holding all these teeth for colour matching!

Then came an impression for the bottom set, presumably so the ‘bite’ matches. There he was saying ‘looser, looser’ again, which he did on my first visit, although this time he was pressing the mould firmly down in my mouth. There I was with his gloved fingers in my mouth when he said ‘put your top teeth to your bottom teeth’ and what did I do, I bit his fingers. I thought the poor man was going to have a fit, but he did say to put my teeth together, so being an obedient thing I did. He said ‘I didn’t mean bite me’ to which I said ‘I told you I was a vampire’ this was with much laughing, although very muffled by me.

Eventually it was over but the downside is that I have to go back three more times before I get my new teeth, oh what joy, I bet he’s looking forward to that the poor man, so I’ll just have to take the spring out of my jaw before I clamp my teeth together and bite him again!
