Back to the decorating

Back to the Decorating

Hello everyone, I’m back again, with some good news from the homefront. All of a sudden, Kevin decided that he was going back to the decorating on Saturday afternoon. He’s been busy working on computer things to the point that the promised decorating had taken a back shelf again. About which I have been very patient and not nagged.

So I was surprised when he suddenly blurted out that he was going to paint the kitchen ceiling. I was unsure whether he meant he was going to paint the Sistine Chapel on my kitchen ceiling or what after not mentioning it for a while. Then I found out he was going to emulsion it, phew what a relief, he would have been there months or even years.

OK I am daft I know, but nothing surprises me living here. If he decided he wanted to paint cherubs all over the ceiling, he would find a way to do it. I’m not joking, as he can be very stubborn, especially with a challenge which makes him want to succeed even more!

Anyway, with Kevin back to the decorating, Jane and I were in the front garden enjoying the lovely sunshine. I’d been ordered to sit down and not move, so with Jane deadheading plants, that’s what I did.

A Plastic Grotto

When it got nearer to tea time we thought we’d better go in and see what was what. Having been ordered to go in through the front door and not the side, we walked into a plastic grotto.

All the kitchen units were covered from top to bottom in plastic, ready to get painting. But my worry was that he would push me behind the plastic and seal me in – there was so much of it. I didn’t fancy being an Egyptian mummy, so I got out of the whirling dervishes way, just in case.

He’d covered every single one of the ceiling lights in masking tape, which is brilliant because it’s so easy to get paint all over them if you don’t. It didn’t take him long really to do the top once he had got back to the decorating. I did wonder if he was worried that if he took his time tea would be late! We got all the ‘stuff’ out of the way and set to making tea.

When are we going back to the decorating again?

On Sunday morning I was hoping that he would make a start on painting the kitchen walls. I didn’t get an answer either way. So just in case he decided to do the deed, Jane and I set about emptying the glass cupboards in the kitchen and washing all the nick-nacks in sight. We can just put everything back then, after they’ve been put out of the way of the dust.

We eventually got tidied up and prepared for our meal that we’d ordered from The Briardene, a take away one obviously. It was booked for one o’clock so we just got done in the nick of time before it was delivered.

Having had one before we knew there would be a lot of boxes. Roasties, puddings and anything crispy comes in a foil tray, with the moist food in boxes – but there seemed even more this time. The worktop was covered in food, all in containers of course, and there was Kevin drooling at the sight of it! It was hardly surprising – there was such a lot of it.

The most delightful Sunday Dinner

We uncovered a box of cauliflower cheese, carrots, swede and a couple of unsliced roasted onions which were so yummy. We had the feather blade beef and I’ve never tasted anything as tender in my whole life, it literally dropped to pieces when you put a fork next to it. Plus, joy of joys, a pot of gravy so that you could have as much or little as you wanted.

Home made Yorkshire puddings, delicious new potatoes, roast potatoes, you name it, it was there. It was all fresh, none of the heated up frozen stuff you can get. We saved the beautiful prawn cocktail starter with its own sauce in a pot for our tea!

Sticky toffee pudding

Best of all was the sticky toffee pudding that was, as Kevin put it, the best he’d ever had. I don’t know whether you were supposed to but we warmed it up and it went all gooey!

Kevin’s plate was piled up like a pyramid. I think he’d have been better with a tray to eat his food from – he had the biggest plate in the house to start with!

The trouble was, by the time we’d finished, we all felt very fat and full – and sleepy might I add. As you can guess, the kitchen walls didn’t get painted either! We looked like a row of pigs that had just been fed with this silly satiated look on our faces. All I can say to Deano, the owner, is well done for such a beautiful meal, it was absolutely delightful. But as he’s a Michelin trained chef what can you expect!
