Jane and I went off back to Blackpool to take some things back last week. It was lovely having time to do what we wanted to do instead of constantly working! But before I get round to that, I thought I would mention the weather again although not trying to bore you.
On Sunday we were promised rain but the sun was shining, the sea shades of blue and turquoise with golden sands. The weather forecast often predicts rain and we get sunshine instead. Must be our little microclimate.
What a place to live. I marvel every day at the sense of peace here, just watching the skies and sea change. It’s a view I never get fed up of. I always wanted to live by the sea and never in a month of Sundays did I think that my dream would come true. But it did, after a series of things pushed us into doing something about it. I couldn’t imagine going back inland, especially as it was hilly where we lived.
Being a lot older now, I love being on the flat. I don’t miss the greenery so much as I was surrounded by it all my life before, but it’s just so lovely here. Even when it’s rough, the sea is still beautiful, in a different way. How lucky we are to have been able to move here and I’m so glad we did. Would I go back? No, I don’t think wild horses would drag me there!
If you’re interested, here’s another post about how we ended up moving to the coast. We know that lots of you have read it, especially when you’ve been thinking about making the move yourselves.
Back to Blackpool
Anyway, enough of the that. I thought I would tell you about last Friday, when Jane and I went to Blackpool to take some trousers back that hubby had bought earlier in the week. They were the same colour and the same size, but a slightly different style. Now you would think they would both fit him wouldn’t you? Yes to one pair but no, not a chance with the other.
He came into the room to show us – at which point we told him that he needed to lose weight to get in them! The waist was too small (perfect on the first pair) and the length was wrong. Wouldn’t you think they would be the same as the first pair but no, not on your Nellie. That was to be our first port of call, but Jane was sure that you had to pay to park in Sainsbury’s if you didn’t spend £10. So instead she decided to park at the Houndshill and push me there.
The sun was shining but it was a cool wind in the shade. But after negotiating every bump and pebble we got there and did the deed. We also discovered that you can park for 90 minutes without having to pay. So we could have stopped off there and saved the walk! It was fairly quiet which suited me, and after getting another pair of trousers for himself we set off back to M&S.
Mmmm, Sausage Roll!
Of course no visit to Blackpool would be complete without a sausage roll from Greggs. It’s a tradition in our house that when we go there we have one, usually half each, watching the calories or something. So, we sat in St John’s Square with our half a sausage roll and reflected on life and how great it was to be here, like you do!
Off we went then into M&S where I bought a very nice long sleeve t-shirt – white with a small black hearts. Better still it fits me and looks nice so I’m a happy customer. Did you know that the shop has lost its upstairs? A friend had previously told me, so menswear has all gone down into the ground floor.

It’s a bit of a squash, but I was puzzled by the huge stock of bras and underwear on the ground floor which take up a lot of room. There was also an absolute stack of ladies trousers too, every shape and size that you dream off. Of course, just these two ranges alone took up a heck of a lot of floor space. I ask you. Why so many bras and trousers? There’s far too much choice, at the loss of more interesting things they could have put there, in my opinion.
Coming in Handy…
Off we went then to TK Maxx for a browse round. We had a look round the ground floor which to me always resembles a bit of a jumble sale, but there were some nice things to be had. The pile of clothes on my knee was gradually getting higher and higher until you could barely see me. Well I do come in handy for some things after all!
I was naughty and bought two or three things, but not clothes. I can’t resist some of the things upstairs. We really enjoyed having a fuddle (Yorkshire term) and a look in the sale stuff. I also got some bras which were very nice and fit perfectly, so what more could you want. We came out of there with a lot lighter pockets I can tell you, but it was nice after all the months of staying in.
We made our way back to the Houndshill, me aching all over from sitting in one spot and Jane doing very well in the pushing job.
Back in Blackpool to Bumps, Cobbles and Wobbles
Having said that, when we went to Sainsbury’s there are a lot of cobbles to ride over which gave us a lot of laughter. I was jolted up and down with my cheeks looking like they were on a spaceship with Gforce gravity as they wobbled up and down. Of course I had to add to the effect and do some juddery noises as it was like being in a boneshaker. I said to Jane that people would think I had Parkinson’s disease or St. Vitus dance the way my face was jiggling up and down.
We did pause down a side-alley at the side of Hive, to pose for a picture with the new line-up background though!

But eventually we got back to flat pavements and the fight of the not-so-dropped kerb. I tell you they’re awful, everywhere you go, and far from dropped. You end up with a disabled person being turned out backwards into the road with traffic zooming past at a rate of knots. Going backwards is the only way to get up what’s supposed to be a dropped kerb!
The pavements and roads aren’t made for wheelchairs, I have found that out. But as the alternative is staying in forever or getting shaken to death – which do you think I opted for!!!!
