In different places you’ll enjoy amazing views from the Fylde Coast. What can you see across the Irish Sea and river estuaries? You can enjoy different views across the water, of wind farms, sea traffic and far away coastlines.
The Fylde Coast is the peninsula between two river estuaries. In the south the River Ribble and in the north the River Wyre.
Views across the water from Lytham
In the south at the Ribble Estuary the views across the sea look across the water to Anglesey and North Wales. In the foreground Southport looks close enough to walk across to.
Views across the water from Blackpool
At Blackpool you’re on the flat edge of the land mass so the horizon is long and clear. Views across the sea from Blackpool do include the offshore windfarms and occasional passing ships.
Above your head you’ll see plenty of small planes, jets and helicopters. They’re coming to land at Blackpool Airport – with larger planes coming to land elsewhere in the UK.
Close proximity to BAE at Warton means that there are often test flights of fighter jets being played out above our heads. You certainly won’t miss those as they roar across the sky. They sound amazing!
Views across the water from Cleveleys
Further north along the coast approaching Bispham and heading towards Cleveleys, the Offshore Windfarms come more clearly into view.
You can also see various offshore rigs in the Irish Sea and ferries crossing from Heysham to Ireland.
In the right light conditions you can even see the Isle of Man – with the help of a mirage!

Views across the water from Fleetwood
Travel to the northern tip of the Fylde Coast for amazing views across the sea from Fleetwood.
Beyond the River Wyre estuary is Knott End, the Lake District, Morecambe Bay, Heysham and Lancaster. Depending on the weather they all come clearly into view.

Identify those Boats and Planes
It’s amazing how the various landmarks look so different when viewed from the various places on the coastline. It’s because of the way that the convex curve of the coast positions you at different angles.
Do you know how to identify the boats and planes which you see? You can also find out where they are travelling from/to.
It’s not something we’d ever be keen on doing, but numerous readers have sent in their photos from flights across the Fylde Coast.
