This area of north west UK shoreline is a peninsula of land, carved out over centuries by water. The two Fylde Coast Rivers – Ribble and Wyre – are the top and bottom boundaries to this peninsula, with the Irish Sea at the left. The above amazing photo is the area seen from the International Space Station!

Fylde Coast Rivers – Ribble and Wyre
In the north, the River Wyre winds its way from its source at St Michaels to the shore between Fleetwood and Knott End.
The Wyre’s journey goes through pretty countryside. The River separates the more rural areas of Poulton and Thornton from the rural villages ‘Over Wyre’ – over the other side of the River Wyre.

In the south, the River Ribble rises way inland, near the Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire. It’s 75 mile route goes through the Preston Docks to discharge into the Ribble Estuary.
The Fylde Coast side of the Ribble includes of course Lytham, plus the villages of Warton, Freckleton and others.
