School children across Blackpool are still getting free school meals as deliveries continue to be made by Blackpool Catering Services operated by Blackpool Council.
As of Thursday 26 March, over 2,600 pupils who are now at home have still been able access this service. It provides them with a five day supply of lunch food.
Blackpool Catering Services received orders during the week for 13,055 school meals across 24 schools, with more expected.
By Wednesday, 11,460 meals had been dispatched to 19 schools across Blackpool. A further 1,595 meals were sent out to five schools on Thursday.
School Meals Still Served Up each Week
Blackpool Catering Services, with the support of redeployed employees from Blackpool Council Leisure Services, are packing up the meal parcels on a daily basis. Then they’re distributed to individual schools.
Parents and carers can collect them at school pick up points to take them home.
Safeguarding people
Meals have been provided in batches of five for each child, to reduce the frequency schools need to be visited to safeguard parents, staff and young people during this period.
John Blackledge, Blackpool Council Director of Community Services, said: “We are so pleased that we have been able to continue to provide this vital service and have been very mindful to choose this means of distribution to safeguard people.
“The welfare and well-being of children is so important and I am delighted that our teams have been able to ensure that youngsters can still have free school meals without additional pressure being put on parents and carers.”
