Travel Talks

Travel Talks is a non-profit making club, providing illustrated travel talks from a variety of interesting speakers. They might be recognised professional writers, photographers and journalists, or our own members and travellers from across the country.

Meetings consist of illustrated talks covering all parts of the world. New members and visitors are most welcome.

  • Facilities: Suitable for the disabled, including audio loop.
  • Refreshments: Available during the break.
  • Cost: Membership is £20 for the season. Visitors may pay at the door for a fee of £4 per meeting. This fee will be refunded if you join as a full member.

“Hidden Kingdoms.”   Pax Garabedian opens our season with his travels through Bangladesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, visiting remnants of ancient kingdoms & meeting its smiling people.

“Pompeii: Vesuvius’ Legacy & Warning.” David Edwards uses his expertise as a guide to the mountain & ancient sites, recounting fascinating stories from the clues that litter the landscape. He asks “What next?”

“Northern Cyprus- a Divided Island.”  Revisiting after a gap of 20 years, Chris & Keith Buxton tell us about the regions chequered history as it lies at the crossroads between East and West. They reveal the many reasons to visit this fascinating part of the island.

Ann McCarthy travels by cruise ship from “Buenos Aires to Rio by the Coastal Route.” In addition she visits the Iguaçu Falls from both Argentina & Brazil,  & spends time in Rio. En route she shows us a massive natural spectacle, wonderful architecture, and Brazilians at play.

Ray Wilson travels regularly to “Peninsular Malaysia & Singapore” to visit family. He contrasts the post-colonial communities of Kuala Lumpur & Melaka with the poorer regions to the east – and proposes that travelling from Singapore by train is more interesting than journeying by ship or plane!

John Atherton shares with us a  “A South Africa Diary,” telling us of a safari  from Jo’burg to the Cape, exploring parts of South Africa, Swaziland & Lesotho – a three week journey with a truly wide range of experiences.

We start the New Year with the return of Anne & Gordon Sharp, from Spellbound, who use their video camera to enable us to experience “Imperial China.”

Wednesday 12th February 2020

Photographer George Steel takes a look beyond the normal tourist views in his talk “The Seeing Eye in Venice.” He looks at the history, architecture, transport, and living conditions in the city and the islands.

Wednesday 26th February 2020

Tonight we have a double bill from John and Rosamund Macfarlane.

Firstly “Living with Nomads and Eagle Hunters in Mongolia,” – where they lived with 3 different families in the Altai Mountains. Secondly in “Japanese Culture and Snow Monkeys,” they recount a winter journey on Hokkaido and the mainland.

 “Corsica -Island of Beauty” is David and Julie Swift’s latest talk.They uncover the secrets of this magical island, from breathtaking medieval hilltop villages to majestic mountains and hidden sandy coves.

Wednesday 1st April 2020

Pat and Alan Porrett love the UK’s “The Landmark Trust Experience.” The Trust’s properties tend to be historical follies in interesting locations and we will see the buildings and nearby places of interest.

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Les and Pauline Mason take us back to New Zealand with their talk “Auckland and its Environs”. During their extended visits to North Island they have explored some lesser known destinations and examined the history and culture of the country.

Wednesday 6th May 2020

Tonight is the AGM, after which Keith & Sue Clark present “Aragon: a Spanish region of history & spectacular scenery.” It is the land of Catherine, castles, conflict, cloisters, and cathedrals, from the high Pyrenees to the city of Zaragoza.
