Digger land at Cleveleys for the Wyre Beach Management Scheme

Welcome to Digger Land

It’s been what you call a bit noisy in front of our house recently, with three enormous bright yellow diggers on the beach. It’s been like digger land!

They’ve been digging deep holes all the way from the café to the five bar gate to see what is happening under all the sand. They’ve gone very deep and we keep seeing piles of sand being dug out and dumped somewhere else.

We did wonder if they were having a sandcastle competition and enjoying playing in the sand at the same time. They said they would be here for 4-5 weeks, but in the end they’ll be done and dusted in no time.

Why Digger Land?

It’s been like digger land because of the new beach works that are going to happen, to help prevent flooding. Jane went out last week to do this video which explains –

Sadly, we can’t have a new sea wall, in spite of us being the only stretch on the front without a new one. The fact that it’s cracking and ancient doesn’t seem to matter!

Now that some parking spaces have been hi-jacked to make a compound for all the beach machinery, people have been driving up and down trying to park. It’s free here and you have to pay at all the other ones.

We decided to have a weekend of catching up on a few jobs. Kevin cut the grass at last before it started to look like a field while Jane did some gardening, with me being the forewoman!

Busy Jobs

Kevin also decided to set himself on with doing a job that seemed small and ended up taking all afternoon, and some of the evening. There’s a fence along our drive, separating us from next door. Next door built it a few years ago, and we ended up with a channel about four or five inches wide between it and the drive. When it’s windy, it gets full of plastic and everything under the sun. Loads of weeds grow, which you have to practically lie down on your stomach to reach in the deep channel.

Kevin came up with the idea of filling it with some wood that was in the garage that he wanted to get rid of. So he had his electric bench saw out, the car out of the garage and the garage floor covered from one end to another in sawdust, tools. You name it was there.

Those of you know Kevin will know that he isn’t the tidiest of workers. He’s only happy when he creates as much mess as he possibly can and this was no exception.

What a mess

I went to see what he was doing to be met by a cloud of sawdust as he merrily sawed away at his wood like a little boy in a sandpit. The mess was his usual standard, blooming terrible. How he does it I don’t know. He managed to have sawdust, tools all sorts of things far up the drive, as only he can! There he was, luckily in old work clothes, as happy as Larry (whoever Larry was). It reminded me of watching Jane playing in the dirt when she was a child.

He broke off for his tea and then went out again and slowly started tidying up. Though how he could make sense of all the boxes and tools and goodness knows what I’ll never know, I suppose it was an organised mess to him. He did a lovely job of it as he usually does, being a perfectionist.

Jane and I went out while he was ‘tidying’ up and the next thing we knew, out came the vacuum cleaner to hoover the drive suck all the sawdust up.

That had us laughing our heads off at him as he was grinning away like someone who has had a lot of experience pushing one!!

Doesn’t everyone hoover the drive?

People were passing the drive and looking at him hoovering away as though he had lost the plot, which made us laugh even more. I should say that he has an old vac which he keeps in the garage for doing dirty jobs. It’s a good idea, as he’d get hung drawn and quartered if he used the house one!

Anyway, he got his own back on Jane. Later when she’d gone to bed and he’d eventually come in after his mammoth clean up.

He told her that he thought they’d started fracking with all the vibration he felt. Or had there been a herd of elephants or pigs? Jane was snoring her little head off. We all had a good laugh when we were told this, although I think Jane thought he was having her on as she always says she doesn’t snore.

Turn them over

My hubby can be heard streets away when he starts snoring – he’s deafening. He’s had many a kick in the night while he’s asleep and kept me awake, just to shut him up, I’m a cruel husband beater aren’t I, but never mind, I bet a lot of you out there can relate exactly to what I’m saying.

It’s like an express train roaring through the bedroom, although I couldn’t have hit him that hard. He didn’t have bruises to show for it and as usual, he went straight back to sleep and carried on!
