So the virus is still doing it’s destruction job the blooming thing. We all, except our mad inventor Kevin who is our shopper, have stayed put for five weeks. We’re quite enjoying it. Not having to go out is a real treat, especially for Jane, as she was in and out all the time with work. I have several hobbies which keep me going, but it must be awful if you have nothing to do like some people I know. They must be bored stiff. Not that I sit doing hobbies all day, far from it, but when it’s relaxation time I enjoy doing what I want to, it’s lovely.
We keep saying that before lockdown is over, there will be a lot of people who don’t want to go back to work after all the freedom. And are we going to have a nation of long haired hippies? Now that would be interesting. You have to try and see the light hearted side of it don’t you, before we all go mad!
Taking your own sweet time
Life carries on in our house. Kevin is decorating the staircase and hall, which he’s been doing for a week now. He can take his own sweet time and not think he has to work as well. And he’s enjoying not sitting in front of a computer the long hours he usually does.
Anyway, Jane ordered some ‘proper’ face masks for him to wear for when he’s out on his shopping trips. He put one on yesterday and looked quite like a dashing doctor from some TV programme. We did have some laughs at him though, as usual. This took place after lunch yesterday when we thought he was getting organised for the decorating. He seemed to have been gone ages so we thought we’d better see if he had gone somewhere to perform a bit of surgery. But no, he was in the bottom corridor.
Our Mad Inventor
Jane was standing there looking, I don’t know if you would call it irritated or just plain amused, with the ‘he’s at it again’ face. For those of you who don’t know Kevin, he’s famous for inventing things. We always call him our mad inventor. He sees anything that he’s doing as a challenge and yes, it does take forever to get a simple job done due to his fiddle-faddling.
He didn’t let us down however, because there he was hunched over his mask, reinventing that!
Obviously when you have it on, you end up with a little bend in the sides of the fabric which is big enough to let the dreaded virus in. Jane suggested just putting a staple in either side of the mask to make it fit better, but our budding Einstein had fetched out his eyelet making gadget. He was practising how to put those press-stud like metal things onto the mask.
Reinventing the Wheel
Goodness knows how long he’d been at it but when I had a look I could see what Jane meant. Kevin and I are so alike in everything that he tends to use me as a back-up for his ideas. More often than not I can see where he’s coming from when the other two can’t.
On this occasion, in spite of his pleading face encouraging me to agree with him, when I said I would also staple the mask, our mad inventors face crumpled and he threw the towel in. Thank goodness or he would still be there now, trying to conquer the perfect fit! Imagine having that performance whenever he went out, he wouldn’t have time to go to sleep it would take him that long!
So anyway, off he went back to the staircase to do some sanding. He uses wet and dry sandpaper which hardly makes any dust, unlike when I used to do all the decorating and used the electric sander. Even with a dust bag on it you would have thought you’d been in the middle of a desert sand storm -it made so much mess.
Becoming Fred, the Homepride Man
The dust flew everywhere believe me, including over me. I used to turn from brunette to grey in two minutes, it went up my nose and everywhere. I don’t know about you, but I hate all the dust that flies into other rooms when you’re cleaning, meaning all those would have to be wiped down too. Ah happy days. Not!!
Now he’s got all the dust sheets up and is starting the mammoth task of glossing in the stairs and hallway. When I think how I used to do such a lot of decorating and now I can hardly hold a paintbrush never mind painting. It annoys me to death that my stupid body stops me from doing what I know I could be doing to help.
My final comment is that I hope the lockdown carries on, just in our house and long enough for him to finish all the jobs he’s not done! Wouldn’t that be nice, methinks. It’s so nice to be getting the house looking fresher, not that it was exactly minging in the first place!
