What next - now it's a daddy long legs walking across me! That and other news from Chrissie Towers in today's blog.

Our Barmy House

I keep telling you that we live in a barmy house, well we’ve been at it again.

The other night, well a couple of nights ago, I woke up and was getting out of bed. When to my horror, I discovered that I’d been sleeping with a horrible black spider besides me, neatly tucked away in the warmth and dark.

To say I was horrified was an understatement, believe me. I shot out of bed and got the spider catcher, while hoping that it hadn’t disappeared into the bottom of my bed.

Down came a spider to lay down beside her…

Luckily, I must have shocked it with the daylight as it was still curled up enjoying its lie in! ‘Not for long little fellow’ I thought as I got my catcher and neatly scooped it up before it had chance to move. ‘You’re mine’ I thought and ‘it serves you right for sharing my space and frightening me to death’!

Eventually, I got organised and hoping it hadn’t suffocated (I don’t like them but couldn’t kill them) I let it out of the back door and it scuttled off to freedom, with me hoping it wouldn’t come straight back in!

Spinning a web…

You might wonder where I’m going with this, but last night, I woke in the night convinced that a spiders web had been spun over my face. Horrified, I physically, and wide awake, started to pull the cobweb off my face. I swear I could feel it and it was horrible. I thought it might be the evicted spider that I had got rid of.

Again I jumped up out of bed, except for the fact that I had forgotten how painful my knees are, especially as they woke me up the same night.

Looking back it was hilarious really, as I tried to balance myself with the edge of the bed while my legs were buckling under me with pain. I fell onto the bed and nearly slid down it. What a sight that must have been, although guess who slept through it! I waddled my way to the bathroom, as it was 4am and in my stupor I thought I must want a tinkle. But eventually I managed to navigate myself back to bed.

Our Barmy House becomes a Chinese Laundry…

Before all that had happened, and before I even got to bed, I thought I’d landed in Mr. Wishy Washy’s Chinese laundry. Why, you might or not might wonder?

Well, I usually put a load of washing on at night, especially as this new machine takes longer. By the time morning comes, when they’ve been on the clothes-horse all night, they’re more or less dry. So that’s good, especially through the Winter months, and it halves the amount we have to tumble dry.

What you won’t know, is that a long while ago I made the men my stand-in deputy’s for emptying the washer when it’s finished. It’s usually later on when I’m in bed watching TV.

Now although I’ve told them, they insist on putting things that are thicker and take more drying at the bottom of the clothes horse and the thin things on the top. I’m sure that you will know it should be the other way round.

Womanly advice

I popped into the kitchen when they were just in the middle of all this washing and tried offering friendly womanly advice, like you do. I hung the mens hooded jackets by the hood onto the back of the chairs as I knew they would dry better. My hubby piped up that I was ‘interfering’ with his washing. Meanwhile, Kevin, was squatting on the floor, legs crossed and looking like a Buddha, sorting the washing as he pulled it out of the machine.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the pair of them. Especially when hubby said that they had their routine and I was disrupting it. They looked like two old men, sorting their washing out on a river bank. It was so funny to see them.

I got packed back off to bed in between them chuntering away under their breath. No doubt that I was a busy body. Guess what, when I went into the kitchen the morning after, it had all been put back where they wanted it to go. And it wasn’t as dry as it could be. Is that what you call male stubbornness!

Our Barmy House

Anyway, I keep telling you that there is never a dull moment in our barmy house. Well this will show you a fraction of what happens in a day in our house.

Some might think ‘how do they stand it’ while others would think ‘good on them’ as we say in Yorkshire. It certainly gives us oldies a young outlook as there’s always something going on here, with lots of laughs. It might be strange to others, but it works for us. So we enjoy our life together, which in my book can’t be bad.
