As you may remember me telling you, we've had this week off, and very welcome it is too. It's been lovely to unwind, do nothing and actually go out!

Online Shopping

What do you think about wearing masks in shops? I personally think it should have been in place a long time ago. There’s no wonder we’re all turning to online shopping.

Kevin is our main shopper, and has always worn one when he goes to the shops, and so he should. Anything that helps to snooker that horrible little bug the better.

Have you seen photos of the actual virus, its shown in red with sort of tufted spikes all round it. It looks like the mines that destroyer ships used in World War Two, that they used to sink submarines. They also used to ‘plant’ them in the sea in the hope that submarines ran into them.

On the photos I’ve seen of the little horror is the most vivid red. But I just wish it would go into the sea like the old bombs did!

People are commenting that they’ve gone to Cleveleys and turned away when they’ve seen how people aren’t distancing. Kevin says it’s been like that all the time that he has been shopping. What’s wrong with people that they can risk themselves and others?

It’s obvious there are a lot of visitors too, which would be welcome under normal circumstances. The dead give away are the bucket and spades that a lot of parents and grandparents are carrying. My friends tell me that they are also reluctant to go into the town because of the risks. After all, towns only an hour away have such rises in transmission that some of them have had their own lockdown measures introduced. So don’t bring it here!

The Rise of Online Shopping

Anyway, leaving all that behind, we have made a new discovery. Online shopping for food, which Jane thinks is great after using it.

Poor Kevin has been going to Sainsbury’s every week for us to do the bulk of supermarket shopping. Jane has been nattering about it for ages, but finally decided we were going to do it. It made Kevin’s eyes light up.

There we were, phone in hand, going through all that we usually buy, clicking away – and it’s so easy. The shopping turned up as promised – about two minutes early. A pleasant man then handed it all over to us. The only fault being that he didn’t unpack and put it all away! Joking of course!

Pros and Cons of online shopping

We’ve heard horror stories of people receiving out of date vegetables and manky stuff. We found all our fresh stuff had a long sell by date, sometimes better than you get in the shop. All in all, I can’t fault it. Jane’s tickled pink at the thought of not having to physically go out to get the shopping.

I think it’s fair to say that she’s well and truly converted. For example, I’d made a bread and butter pudding and remarked that we needed some more brown sugar. So she gets her phone out, searches for brown sugar and adds it to the shopping list.

Making shopping more pleasant

The only trouble is, we’ve made friends with some of the staff. They keep asking Kevin when we will be going in as they miss us. Isn’t that nice and we do miss them, so I think we shall be going in now and then.

The way I’m talking you’d think we’d never shopped online at all. We buy anything and everything else, and with an Amazon Prime account, how can you not! But we’ve just never got round to making the plunge and buying our weekly food shop.

There’s no wonder everyone is saying that this virus will alter how people shop and I think they’re right. Having said that, I do miss going to the shop myself. It’s nice to browse and get what you want that you couldn’t think of while doing your phone list. As Jane said, it’s good to get the heavy stuff brought to the door. So here we come, now online shopping for food.

Oh Dear…

I think poor Kevin’s brain has been a bit fried and pickled. He keeps coming out with all sorts of rubbish.

Jane had a men’s hair cutting day last weekend. Kevin came into the kitchen with his lovely curly locks shorn off and said, ‘I look like Samsung’. Waiting for him to explain, he said ‘he lost his strength when he had his hair cut off’. We looked at him as though he’d lost his marbles, which is in doubt at the best of times. We both cracked out laughing at the same time. Leaving a perplexed looking Kevin wondering why we were in stitches at what he’d said.

I managed to splutter out that he should have said it was Samson… Not to be content with one faux pas he added “I’ve got my Greek mythology mixed up…”

I told him the name comes from the bible. Not mythology, or Samsung the company, to which he also fell about laughing. It really amused us for the rest of the day, the poor lad.

Now doing crosswords he keeps saying what’s this and that, making more howlers for us to laugh at. He certainly cheers us up when he starts, they ought to bottle it and nobody would be miserable anymore. I shouldn’t say that should I. With his inventive mind, it’s odds on that he would try and do just that. He certainly keeps us on our toes with all the things he comes out with. You wouldn’t think he’s super intelligent, bless him. But what is it they say, genius is next to madness!
