I can’t believe how the weather has changed so rapidly! After sweating at the nose end the last few days it now feels like winter! The change came on Tuesday morning, when Jane went to Lytham to do some vlogs.
She went out in her sundress, all set for another hot day, like you do. Then came back in cold, very windy and dark weather! Luckily she went out early and managed to do what she wanted in the sunshine. This is one of the videos she made, from Lytham Green –
Now it Feels Like Winter!
I too was boiling all morning as I went about doing my jobs. When I went into the kitchen to put the dinner out I couldn’t believe how hot I was. Then in a short space of time, the wind got up, the blue sky became dark grey, and I cooled down mightily fast I can tell you!!
The wind is now roaring around the house as though it’s November. After the lovely weather we’ve had, it’s a bit of a let down. It’s been blowing across the beach like the Sahara desert!
Still, we are here in one piece to tell the tale as they say, so it can’t be too bad can it.
Cleveleys on the Telly
Did you see us on the local BBC news this week? I was just about to set a recording when I heard ‘Cleveleys’ mentioned. Not knowing if there was another Cleveleys anywhere, my ears pricked up and I watched Rossall Beach unfold right in front of me.
It showed the beach from the café to the five bar gate, including the notice board and interviewing people for their view on Covid. They talked to the ice cream man who was all masked up. I wouldn’t think he was suffering too much as there seems to be plenty of people walking round, avidly sucking on their cornets before it runs down their chins.

Melting ice cream…
We’ve all been there for that one haven’t we. All it needs is a hot day, an ice cream in your hand (don’t you just love the raspberry sauce, along with some sprinkles) which somehow finds its way down through your fingers and all over everywhere. It was lovely to see our little bit of heaven on the national news, well the regional anyway. It did look clean and nice too. The sun was shining along with blue skies and people looking happy, sucking their ice creams.
I must say, it’s not stopped the oldies from coming and enjoying a day out on the seafront. After all, who wouldn’t like to be here when the sun is shining and relaxing you. The prom is very busy every time the sun shines. I don’t know where they’re all coming but it’s obvious there’s a lot of people who haven’t been here before. They get their deck chairs ready, out comes the picnic and flasks and off they go, lying back in their chairs having a whale of a time.
Dance of the Deck Chairs
Talking about deckchairs, can you remember when you were a visitor to Blackpool and the central prom was full of deck chairs to hire. We had to pay quite a big deposit, until you took the chairs back to get a refund for it. A good idea really, because prior to this we often saw abandoned deckchairs on the beach. Tired, sunburnt people couldn’t be bothered to take them back onto the prom.
Can you remember the fun that we used to have putting the deckchairs up on the already crowded beach? It could be quite hilarious as people pushed the frame one way, then another, trapping their fingers in it. It was so simple to do really. But when you’d picked your place to stay for the best part of the day, you’d already lugged all the bags, bucket and spades and all the paraphernalia that you needed to have a day on the beach. So putting a deckchair up was the last thing you wanted to get in a muddle about.

The top of the frame swung over another part and so on, a bit like solving a Rubik’s cube, until you managed to get all the pieces of wood going where they should be. My poor hubby got himself into a lather more times than I can count doing that job. Although when it came to putting our windshield up (which we brought from home) he got even more wound up.
Oh and the Windshield too!
We had a wooden mallet which came with us every time we went on holiday, along with the suntrap, but he still managed to get in a tizzy with it. There would be Jane and I watching, bucket and spade ready, while hubby got more and more agitated as he tried to knock the wooden posts into the sand. When he was fairly on the way to getting it in place, I would inevitably say to him ‘you’ve got it facing away from the sun’ which often happened. Then he’d get even more in a mood when he had to start all over again!
You would see other families on the beach having the same conversation that we did as other men struggled. It was quite comical really. Jane always said that when she grew up she wanted to be a deckchair attendant. Quite an aspiration don’t you think, although she would be about six then. I think it was the appeal of the ticket bag they had across their bodies to take your money and give you your ticket that did it. Who knows, but we did have a laugh at the thought! Now that’s another job that’s been consigned to the history books, like so many others.
There are such a lot of memories stored away in the old grey matter, but how lovely to look back on them!
