Fun and Games with my Dentist

Fun and Games with my Dentist

I don’t know if you are interested or not, but here goes anyway. For those of you who read my blogs you may know that, for six months, I’ve been having fun and games with my dentist.

The week after the virus reared its ugly head, I was due to go and have my new palate fitted, to fill the gap where my non-existent milk teeth were, which I’d kept until I was pretty old. I’d already had several visits to make sure everything was ok and literally just needed to collect them.

I got a phone call from them after six months, so off I went in the hopes of having my nice new teeth. That was a couple of weeks ago, where I found out that the new teeth wouldn’t fit at all. We had the whole hygiene carry on, and I had a new impression made. If you’ve never had one, your mouth feels like you’ve had a ton of cold concrete poured into it.

When I went back this week I discovered they’d made a completely new one altogether. Into my mouth went the new wax palate which does look like a finished one I must say. Jane had come in with me, and the dentist asked her to see what she thought of it, that is the new look palate. After coming closer from her comfy settee, she decided that my fourth tooth in, the new one, looked a bit like a fang.

Now being compared to Count Dracula was not the look I had in mind when I started all this exercise. As you can imagine there was much laughter, especially when the dentist (who is lovely by the way) touched the ‘fang’ and it fell onto my knee. More laughter from everybody, although as it was a wax one it didn’t take much encouraging to drop into my lap. So there we were, dentist and me retrieving the blooming thing to try again.

Of course, as usual, my dear daughter thought it was highly amusing which accounted for her booming laughter. I bet the people outside thought we had been on laughing gas but it’s far better than shaking in your shoes any day.

Anyway, there he was, going into this speech about the bite on my teeth and how my own teeth next to my missing ones had moved around in the intervening six months. Then the palate was put back in for another go with him saying ‘bite very slowly’. I was thinking that maybe if I went fast I would crunch the whole wax thing into a mushy pile in my mouth. Jane said what I said when I saw the last one, that it looked like the real thing it was so good, apart from being wax. I didn’t fancy the idea of a wax one – imagine if you had a hot drink and it all started melting like a candle, ugh.

My Moving Teeth

After quite a bit of consultation with the assistant, dentist and myself it was decided that it must be my moving teeth that had caused the problem. If they had stayed put instead of rotating a bit this wouldn’t have happened. I did ask what would happen if it still didn’t fit so he said that he could file a bit off where it was catching.

Of course Jane couldn’t resist asking him in joke if he was going to use an angle grinder to file it down. He took that very seriously as he’s a Spanish gentleman and although he’s lived here donkey years, he didn’t quite get our Yorkshire banter. He then had the assistant getting the real grinder disk out of a drawer to show me what he would use, I suppose in case I did think an angle grinder would be put in my mouth. I think the bemused dentist was wondering why we found it funny, but the amount of times I go there, you would think that he’d be used to me. Jane also sees him so he might get our humour one day, who knows.

Anyone seen Dracula?

Eventually it was decided what should be done so all will be revealed in a couple of weeks when the finished real thing will be unveiled to the public. If you see anyone going round Cleveleys with a fang like Draculas you will know that it’s me, not him (Dracula, that is).

I asked what would happen if we had another lockdown like before and would I have to wait for months again to fill my gaps? He told me, very seriously, that he would either bring it here himself or send it through the post. I’ve heard of some things but teeth by post I’ve not. Have you!
