This area of the north west Fylde Coast is quite flat, so apart from the odd gentle incline, you won’t face any proper, steep hills! Making it a perfect place for cycling in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast area. Not only will it get you fit, it’s something to do for free!
Cycling in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast Area
You’ll see all kinds of cyclists here on the Fylde Coast. From little kids with stabilisers, teenagers, families and keep fit folk, through to serious bike riders with all the gear.
Are you a ‘Sunday Rider’? If you’re looking for a short, leisurely route, pop onto the promenade and cycle as far as you like in either direction. It’s a designated cycle track from Fleetwood to Lytham, so you can legally cycle in safety on the promenade. (Please be courteous to users of the promenade, and warn people that you are passing).
If you’re adventurous and want a longer ride, the Fylde Coast is part of Sustrans Cycle Route 62 – Preston to Lytham St Annes to Blackpool.
Do you prefer peace, quiet and solitude? You might prefer to head in a northerly direction, beyond Cleveleys promenade towards Fleetwood. Head through the Five Bar Gate on Rossall Promenade onto the Lancashire Coastal Way. You’ll ride the coast from Cleveleys to Fleetwood. Pick your time and this is likely to be one of the quietest stretches of shoreline.
The first couple of miles are concrete sea defences built after the floods in 1977. Then the concrete drops away at the side of Fleetwood Golf Course and opens out into sand dunes and a coastal path. You’ll pass the big leaning building at Rossall Point, then carry on round the peninsula to the beach huts and Marine Beach at Fleetwood. You can refuel there, at a number of cafes. You could even include a short sail across the River Wyre to Knott End and beyond. Take the Fleetwood Ferry which runs year round from the Esplanade at Fleetwood.
Cycling Events
Whether you’re a serious cyclist or just enjoy joining in, there are a number of bike-ride events each year. These are just some of the big ones – check out our What’s On Guide for loads of things to do.
- Beaverbrooks Bike Ride – with five different routes to choose from there’s something for everyone. A popular event that raises money for Trinity Hospice.
- Ride the Lights – cyclists and pedestrians alike love this great big, traffic-free, free-for-all! It’s preview night before the Lights go on when everyone shows off their own lights and soaks up the atmosphere.
- Ride the Christmas Lights – new at Christmas 2021, this is a winter version of the summer Illuminations event. Starting late afternoon as it goes dark, saddle up to enjoy Christmas Lights and festive spirit!
