What a lovely sunny week we’ve had, in spite of the cold nights and early mornings. It doesn’t half lift your spirits to see the sun shining instead of continual rain, dark sky and cold. So much so that Jane asked me if I’d like to go out. And so our new cafe crawl begins!
Now that’s something I’ve not heard for a long time, ‘would you like to go out’, I wonder why!!!! Never one to turn an opportunity down, I said ‘where shall we go’. The choice was mine, as it was the first proper outing I was going to have after a long time of being a hermit. Apart from essential appointments, of course.
Anyway, after going through a list I decided to go to Cleveleys as I’m not used to my new wheelchair yet. Well not properly, as I’ve found it makes me ache in places I didn’t know about. But it is very comfy and if I want to go out, that’s the price I have to pay.
Just digressing, did I tell you that Derek and I have had our second jabs, thank goodness, with no side effects at all so far. So we should soon have even more protection from the virus. I urge everyone to have the second jab, as it gives better protection. Read about my first jab here.
Changes everywhere
Back to Cleveleys. With the chair in the car along with yours truly, off we went. A lot has changed on our seafront when it comes to house improvements and business changes etc. So Jane was met by me going ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ every two minutes!
We duly parked, she got the chair out and I sat in it, unbeknown to Jane, and started to roll backwards. I did wonder if I was going to have a sticky end under the cars that were passing. Meanwhile the woman in the car next to us couldn’t take her eyes off me, for some reason. Maybe she thought she was going to see some blood and gore.
But it would have served me right, as it was my own not-thinking fault. I’m not used to the different rules when in a chair, so I’d better get learning quickly! Off we went, after Jane located the footrest in the boot of the car, in the middle of grumbling that Kevin must have dropped it when he put the chair in the car.
Our New Cafe Crawl Begins!
I don’t know if you follow Jane’s YouTube videos on Visit Fylde Coast, but she came up with the idea of both of us doing a café crawl. Not a pub crawl – and not all in the same day – but you get the gist!
Off we went for our first episode, deciding to go to the Coffee Bar, having already been there many times before. We managed to get a table at the very end of the outdoor seating, so at least we didn’t have to struggle through the tables and chairs.
Eventually she came out carrying two of those disposable coffee cups, except that we had hot chocolate, and very nice it was too. She also brought a piece of lemon drizzle cake, which was very light and yummy.
All this was enjoyed with the camera running on her phone. Admittedly she’d forgotten her microphone, so we hoped for the best and off we went… Watch it here –
Shy and retiring…!
To say that Jane does vlogs and all sorts of public things, she came over all shy! She kept looking round to see if anyone was watching us doing the deed!
A man on the table next to us kept looking at us as she set the camera up as if to say ‘what are they doing’. He soon found out as we started talking to the phone, which must have looked most odd.

He kept trying to turn to see us with a quick glance here and there. Maybe he thought we were Russian agents, spying on everyone, although we were a bit noisy about it as usual.
We did our talk and commented that Jane had the first half of the cake and I had the second as though we couldn’t afford one each. We just didn’t want to fill up on cake – so a taste was plenty for me.
Normal again
It was so lovely to be in the sunshine again and feel normal, if there ever is a normal in our house! But the streets and all the coffee bars were very busy and the buzz seems to have come back. I so enjoyed sitting in the sun and watching as the world went by. Aah such simple pleasures.
When we had finished, we went to Home Bargains. Now after not going there for over a year, that was a novelty in itself. The shop was surprisingly very quiet, which suited us as it was easier to get round and distance. I had the basket on my knee which was getting piled up until I wondered if I would be able to see over the top… But eventually we got to the checkout and off we went to the next shop.
More Time Please
I went into WH Smiths for my cryptic crosswords and some others I wanted, and then onto the next. The trouble was, we’d gone to Rough Lea Road car park which is only two hours parking. It’s so long since we went shopping we’d forgotten that car park is short-stay.
So because our new cafe crawl begins and we’d been sat in the sun, we only had time for a fly through the front and back doors of M&Co. Then Jane dashed to B&M for her stash of liquorice Flyers and straight to the till. We were aware of the time but would have loved to look round all the shops. We literally got to the car with 5 minutes to spare… and met a traffic warden on the prowl.
You know what that means don’t you. We’ll have to go back and finish looking at the shops that we missed! Next time we’ll go to Derby Road car park too! I think that sounds reasonable don’t you?
I certainly slept with all the fresh air and going out. I really enjoyed it even though I felt a bit like a prisoner on parole if you know what I mean. I wonder where we’ll go next?
