It never rains but it pours

It Never Rains but it Pours…

Can you remember me saying that we have nothing but bad luck in our house? It’s been going on just about all my life. Let’s say it never rains but it pours – apt with Tuesday’s weather…

Here’s a sample of things that have happened in the last two or three days which threw a few challenges at us. I won’t go into details so much as you would have fallen asleep by the time you’d finished, but here goes.

Locked in the Lounge

First of all was the lounge door that decided it had had enough of us using it such a lot and went on strike. The first we learned about this was when hubby came downstairs and said that the door wouldn’t work. Off we all trooped to see what was wrong. Which resulted in Kevin fetching his tool box and completely dismantling the handle to see what was what.

I kept saying ‘what’s wrong with it’ to which Kevin through gritted teeth said, ‘I don’t know until I have the handle to bits’. I smiled sweetly and went off to leave him to sort that one out.

After about 45 minutes it was discovered that it was something to do with the spindle and goodness knows what else in the depth of the handle. Just a good job that no one was in the living room when it had jammed shut, or that’s where they would have stayed!

No Vacuum in the Cleaner

Next, the vacuum cleaner decided that it had done its time and had sucked away until there was no suck left in it. Completely dead, it wouldn’t even turn on.

So again out came his toolbox again, with bits of the cleaner all over the place. That took some sorting out I can tell you but he managed. It turned out that the cable on the machine was the problem. So with it shortened and a new plug fitted, normal service was resumed.

Here Comes the Water…

Then to cap it all, the washing machine decided it was time to aggravate us and spill water all over the floor. As the machine is only eight months old, you wouldn’t expect to find an ever growing puddle of water under it, would you.

Obviously it isn’t even out of guarantee. The shop was duly phoned to be met by the fact that we had to ring Hotpoint. Everyone passes the book these days don’t you think so, it was a case of ringing them up.

That was after Kevin’s trusty tool box came out again, and the machine pulled out into the middle of the kitchen floor. It would be easier to leave it there ready for the next calamity!

Anyway, after several phone calls we made contact with Hotpoint to be told it would be Wednesday (today) when they could come. We’ve been dancing around the washer for days now. It’s pulled out in the middle of the floor, sat on lots of cardboard stuck down with duct tape to stop the floor from being scratched. Not only is the washer in the middle of the floor but the broken, now mended hoover is sitting there too. Though I’m not sure why it’s still there, unless it’s to add to the ambience in the kitchen!

THE Most Expensive Service…

Next came the car. It only went in for a service. Told that it was ok and passed with flying colours, it duly came back.

The trouble was, that when we left the car it was working properly. When we next got in it, the central display panel thing with the heating/radio and sat nav kept going off and making pretty barcode patterns. That’s the short version… the long version would put you to sleep!

So we’ve had lots of phone calls to try and come to some sort of middle line regarding the solution – and the cost! We’ve had a car loaned to us by the garage, so it could have been worse. Our car has been decorating their premises what feels like a lifetime. You can guess we want our own car back sometime soon.

Our heads are now rattling with it, while poor Kevin is ready for climbing a tree to escape. (Although we haven’t got one big enough or he would do). The negotiations are still ongoing but suffice it to say, several hundred pounds are involved, so we aren’t amused!!

And the rain… It Never Rains but it Pours…

On Tuesday morning I had an appointment in Cleveleys so got absolutely sodden wet through in all that torrential rain. You stand to need have wet weather gear when you live by the sea, that’s for sure. It was raining cats and dogs – thank goodness one didn’t drop on my head – now that would have been awful. (A cat or a dog that is…)

It never rains but it pours

Appointment sorted and a little bit of shopping done, we were absolutely soaked when we got home. It doesn’t help that there are puddles on puddles in Cleveleys. The floor is so wonky you end up wading through them.

The rain came in…

Anyway, I got home and went upstairs to find my dogs, to see that the front sliding doors had let a copious amount of water in through the join. The rain was bashing as hard as it could against the glass, but a wet soggy carpet we don’t need.

Having said that, it does usually leak when we get heavy, front driving rain. But nothing on the scale of yesterday. That was exceptional driving rain – and an exceptional amount of it ended up inside the house.

And trickled down…

It didn’t end there either. Kevin went into the downstairs front room and we suddenly heard ‘OMG the roofs leaking’.

Once again we did the mercy dash to see what had happened now. There was a line of water beads straight down the middle of the ceiling.

As you do, my first thought was that we could be standing under it when the ceiling fell in. Although common sense told me it wasn’t at that stage yet, thank goodness. It would have been handy to have a shower though if you fancied once there.

Kevin jiggled the light fitting and got a shower of water on his head. By now, the poor lad really was ready to pull his hair out. Actually it’s a good job he didn’t as there’s not much there anyway!

It never rains but it pours

So we were imagining the ceiling caving in, bringing heaven knows what down. Having plasterers in and decorating, plus was the floor of the balcony above leaking.

Suddenly, Jane had a eureka moment and said ‘it’s coming from the upstairs door that’s leaking’. Off hubby and Kevin went to have a look, and lo and behold it was.

That was a relief, that it can be sorted more easily, after fearing the worst, I can tell you. So that’s another job that needs doing. All these things took place over a matter of two or three days. I’m sure there are some others that I’ve missed. So maybe you can see that I’m not making it up. Everything we touch or buy goes really does go wrong! To the point that we expect it to happen, as it usually does. I wonder what will be waiting for us next? I dread to think!!
