Improving Deansgate

Improving Deansgate

A £7m project giving key roads around Blackpool town centre a major facelift is underway. The next step is work on improving Deansgate.

The scheme is funded by a £6.6m grant from the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership Growth Deal and £740,000 from Blackpool Council. It continues to modernise the look of entrance roads to the town centre.

Work has already taken place to renew Church Street, Dickson Road (pictured above), Talbot Road, Caunce Street and Cookson Street. The plan is to revive town centre streets, with the next phase due to start on Deansgate.

The improvement works will create a better overall appearance as well as safer roads for all users. Works will take place between July 2019 and summer 2020.

Changes include resurfaced pavements and roads, new trees, benches and bins. Plus improved paving at crossings with sensors to help blind and partially sighted people.

Businesses in the town centre will be open as usual throughout the improvements works.

The makeover is part of a wider plan to create a modern Blackpool with more places to shop and eat, new housing, improved public transport including the tramway extension, a conference centre and cleaner, greener streets.

Improving Shop Fronts

Along with improvements to the roads and pavements, the project also involves working with local businesses to help them improve their shop fronts, making both their businesses and the town centre look more appealing.

One such business to have benefitted from the property improvement scheme is The Mortgage Shop.

The family firm based on Topping Street, has had new lighting installed, as well as a new eye-catching shop front featuring an updated logo.

Whilst the company did have plans to modernise the shop front, the business grant from Blackpool Council has freed up funds, enabling the firm to reinvest and enhance the service that is offered to their clients.

Approximate works timetable

July – September 2019 – Deansgate – closed between Topping Street and Abingdon Street

October – December 2019 – Edward Street – closed between Deansgate and Cedar Square Square/Wood Street

January – June 2020 – Topping Street – part closures throughout these months
