Take a Ride on a Heritage Blackpool Tram

With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours you can enjoy an experience like no other, as you take a ride along the world famous Blackpool Tramway aboard a piece of moving history along the fantastic seafront of this world famous seaside resort.

Blackpool Heritage Tram

Up until 2011, the “Heritage” cars were the service fleet trams. Operating every day except Christmas Day, they travelled along the tram lines, carrying residents and visitors from A to B. A multi-million pound upgrade transformed Blackpool's tramway - the tracks were all relaid and a new, modern fleet of low-floor trams are now the service fleet.

However, the original Blackpool trams - with their distinctive 'clickety-clack' as they drive along - are much loved and as integral to Blackpool as fish and chips and the donkeys on the beach - so a core selection of trams from the original system were kept and returned to passenger carrying duties once more.

Many of these original trams are over 80 years old and have been retained and superbly restored. It's a unique experience as nowhere else in the UK can you still ride on a Heritage Tram on the line for which it was originally built.

Blackpool Heritage Trams run most weekends throughout the year, daily during most UK school holidays and, of course, operate our famous Autumn Illumination Tours where you can ride aboard one of the illuminated trams.

Trams for Hire

Along with our Heritage Buses, the trams are also available for hire to help you celebrate your special occasion.

So, whether you want to hire a tram, join us for one of our regular events or just enjoy a very special ride along Blackpool’s Promenade, we have something to offer for everyone.

All of the heritage Tramcars, are, by definition, old! They need tender loving care, maintenance, and in many cases restoration.

Many of them have been moved to different places, different collections, and different owners - so there are opportunities to bring some of them back home, restore them and, one by one, add them to the operational fleet.

Blackpool Heritage Trust are currently fundraising for the restoration of two exciting additions to the fleet - they can't do it without your help!

Paisley & District tramcar no.16 of 1904 (later Glasgow 1016)

Paisley & District Tramcar no 16

Our 'phase one' project is to restore the 4-wheel truck from this tramcar to create a rolling chassis onto which we can then rebuild the body.

To complete this we need four brand new steel tyres, at a cost of £500 each.We have already received our first very generous donation of £500 – which will buy us one tyre. Can you help us to fund the other three?

Once we have the foundations of the tram in place, work can then progress towards rebuilding the body and recreating the missing components that will allow Paisley 16 to take its place on Blackpool's Promenade within a reasonable timescale.

This is a dash panel from Paisley 16 from the later stage of its working life when it was Glasgow 1016. You can see from the state of it how large a task is ahead in restoring it to as-new condition!

Any donation, no matter how big or small will help us to achieve the target and move us towards having a fully overhauled truck for this lovely little tramcar. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to Rigby Road when the work commences, to see the progress for themselves.

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram of 1963

The Blackpool Hovertram returned to us in September 2016 after almost a decade away and having spent periods of time in both Beith, Scotland, and Sunderland. Latterly in the ownership of the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT), the tram initially came back to us on a long term loan.

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram 1963 at Rigby Road

However, NEETT have now presented us with a unique opportunity to actually purchase the Hovertram outright, which will allow it to remain as part of the Blackpool collection, in perpetuity. We feel that this is an opportunity that we should not miss, as it will reunite the entire 1960's illuminated collection under one umbrella and in their original home at Rigby Road.

NEETT have very generously agreed to accept a figure of around half of the £7000 that they have themselves invested in the tram in terms of purchase, moving and storage. We are therefore aiming to raise £3,500 to allow the famous illuminated Hovertram to stay in Blackpool, where it belongs!

Blackpool Hovertram

Again, any donation no matter how big or small will be very much appreciated, and will help us to secure the future of the Hovertram here in Blackpool. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to come and inspect the tram themselves, and to hear first hand about our plans for its future return to use.

Make a Donation

To donate to any of the restoration appeals, please send a cheque payable to “Blackpool Heritage Trust” to 16 Seventh Avenue, Blackpool, FY4 2ED, making it clear whether you wish your donation to support Paisley 16, or Illuminated Hovertram 735.

Alternatively, we would very much appreciate monthly standing orders. This form of regular contribution allows us to forward plan our projects, and will help us to build on our achievements so far and deliver the world class collection of Heritage trams that we all desire to see.

Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours presents 'The Ghost Tram'

Blackpool Heritage Ghost Tours

With your host, the Victorian Ghost Hunter, Stephen Mercer, author of Haunted Blackpool - a ghostly experience on board a Heritage Blackpool Tram!

Monday nights from 7.30pm, a ghostly tour from Pleasure Beach to Fleetwood, lasting around 2 hours.

25 September plus 2, 9 and 16 October. Plus - a HALLOWEEN SPECIAL on Tuesday 31 October at 5.15pm!!

Blackpool has long been a favourite for holiday makers and conjures up cosy images of theme parks, donkey rides, candyfloss and ice-cream.

However, this popular seaside resort harbours some dark and disturbing secrets. Author, and founder of 'Supernatural Events', Stephen Mercer’s terrifying collection of true-life tales, published in his book Haunted Blackpool, is guaranteed to make your blood run cold!

Hear stories of phantom’s on the Prom, spooky shades in the sand and the lady who walks the pier. These and many other stories of the paranormal will make you wonder what happens when silence drops over this iconic holiday destination, when the tourists are tucked away in bed, and when the nightclubs and restaurants close for the night...

Our Heritage tram is over 100 years old and plied the coastal tramway between Blackpool and Fleetwood regularly until 1932 when it too assumed a ghostly existence as an engineer's vehicle that only came out at the dead of night when all other trams were safely back in depot. It was restored to service in 1960 and has spent time running at museums in Derbyshire and Manchester before coming home to Blackpool over 20 years ago. What stories could our tram tell after a life like this?

Stephen said, “I am really looking forward to the Ghost Tram tours. They are going to be exciting as well as of course being quite spooky! Having presented the Blackpool Ghost Walks for the last seven years telling tales of ghosts, hauntings and the paranormal around The Promenade and town centre areas, it will be amazing to go further afield and tell even more stories of the supernatural, myth, mystery and the macabre all the way along the Fylde Coast to Fleetwood. The fact that the tours are taking place on our Heritage Trams is just fantastic, a dream come true!”

The Ghost Tram will run on Monday's 11th and 25th September, and 2nd, 9th and 16th October. Departures are from the Pleasure Beach Heritage Tram stop at 7.30pm, and the tour will go all the way to Fleetwood and back, lasting around 2 hours. Prices are £9.50 per adult, £4.00 child or £21.00 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children – children must be under 16 years of age). Look out for our 'Halloween Special' on 31st October (starting at 17.15)!

Tickets for this thrilling supernatural experience must be booked in advance! Please call Emma on 01253 209521 or email your contact details to heritage.trams@blackpooltransport.com and we'll call you back. Please mention that you saw it here!

Three-day Festival@LightPool

On all three nights of Festival@LightPool, you'll be able to watch performances of Spark! by Worldbeaters Music – a unique and thrilling show with high-impact drumming, superb choreography and stunning lighting.

You'll also be able to see the incredible talents of AFISHAL for the first time in Blackpool. He'll perform his own re-mixes of commercial dance tracks live, using specially-engineered drums. You'll also be able to see the music “projected” on the front of The Blackpool Tower buildings. It is a show not to be missed!

The three day event will be complemented by the free 3D LightPool shows which will be projected on to the front of The Blackpool Tower building throughout Illuminations season between September 1 and November 5.

This year’s LightPool projections will be launched in the w/c September 4 and will feature five individual shows including the three headline shows – Down the Rabbit Hole, Chasing Stars (featuring astronaut Tim Peake) and Enchanted Blackpool. The ideal viewing area to watch the shows is the Comedy Carpet – the area of the Promenade in front of The Blackpool Tower.

Bryan Lindop, Head of Heritage at Blackpool Transport said, “The Illuminated Feature Trams are entirely unique to Blackpool and although they run throughout the illuminations every year, we have never tackled the challenge of operating them all together in convoy before. The opportunity to work in partnership with VisitBlackpool and achieve another amazing first for our wonderful resort was just too exciting an opportunity to miss.

“Every year, the Lightpool Festival gets even more dynamic and spectacular and my team and I are proud to be taking part. Tickets for the processional tour are likely to sell fast, so please book early to avoid disappointment.”

Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours updated their status

Here are our timetables for this weekend. As always with this event none of the journeys are allocated to a particular tram, it's whatever the Pleasure Beach inspector chooses to send! There will also be many additional specials departing Pleasure Beach during the day in addition to these timetabled journeys. We won't be publishing any tram running details this weekend, everything that can run, will run!

Brush car 630 arrives in Blackpool! We were delighted to take delivery of Brush Railcoach 630, on loan to us from our friends at the National Tramway Museum (Crich), yesterday evening. The TMS were very keen that 630 should not miss out on the celebrations of 80 years of the class in Blackpool, and with sponsorship from Peter Whiteley, this particular tram will now be able to join some of its sisters in use on its 'home' tramway. A team from Crich are currently with us to assist with the commissioning of the tramcar to ensure that it can meet its launch deadline on this Friday's Brush car afternoon. We hope to see you there!

Update#8 - 18th September 2017 It's good news from Blackpool on this Monday morning with the restoration of Brush car 621 on target and looking superb. The tram was taken for an early morning Transponder test on Hopton Road, running back and forth a few times before returning to the Fitting Shop. As with any restoration, there are a few last minute jobs to complete and many of these will be done before its launch…. and that launch will be on the Pleasure Beach - Cleveleys service on Friday afternoon (22nd) of the anniversary weekend. Details here: www.facebook.com/BlackpoolHeritageTramTours Thanks to everybody involved and if this is the last update, please come along and support Heritage Tram Tours and the Brush 80 event this coming weekend. It promises to be a superb event. Call in at The Blackpool Tram Shop at North Pier and say hello!

Glasgow 'Honesty Box' comes our way! We were very pleased to recently be contacted by Michael Ryder, who wished to donate to us a genuine original 'honesty box', These boxes were once found on both platforms of all Glasgow trams, inviting passengers who had not had their fares collected by the conductor to leave it in the box. For a long period of time there was a fixed fare for every journey, regardless of length, so a penny fare could take you right across the system, or just a couple of stops. Old photographs reveal that these boxes may have originally appeared on the trams during the First World War (1914-1918), and they endured until the demise of the system in October 1962. Many patriotic calls were given during the war for the population to aid the war effort by being moral, and giving in your uncollected fare may have been one! This particular box was removed from a Glasgow tramcar around the time that the fleet was being broken up in 1962 and has been preserved by Micheal ever since. However, following our acquisition of Paisley 16 (aka Glasgow 1016) for eventual restoration, Michael felt that it was a good opportunity to donate his honesty box to us so that it may one day be reinstated on the platform of a genuine Glasgow tram. Our grateful thanks are due to Michael for his kind gesture, and also for the information contained in this article.

Please note the tram parade on 26th October as part of the Lightpool Festival is now fully booked. Remember, you can ride on our illuminated trams every night of the lights NO BOOKING REQUIRED just board at Pleasure Beach every night from Switch On time and pay the conductor!
