|2016 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence|
With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours you can enjoy an experience like no other, as you take a ride along the world famous Blackpool Tramway aboard a piece of moving history along the fantastic seafront of this world famous seaside resort.
Up until 2011, the “Heritage” cars were the service fleet trams. Operating every day except Christmas Day, they travelled along the tram lines, carrying residents and visitors from A to B. A multi-million pound upgrade transformed Blackpool's tramway - the tracks were all relaid and a new, modern fleet of low-floor trams are now the service fleet.
However, the original Blackpool trams - with their distinctive 'clickety-clack' as they drive along - are much loved and as integral to Blackpool as fish and chips and the donkeys on the beach - so a core selection of trams from the original system were kept and returned to passenger carrying duties once more.
Many of these original trams are over 80 years old and have been retained and superbly restored. It's a unique experience as nowhere else in the UK can you still ride on a Heritage Tram on the line for which it was originally built.
Blackpool Heritage Trams run most weekends throughout the year, daily during most UK school holidays and, of course, operate our famous Autumn Illumination Tours where you can ride aboard one of the illuminated trams.
Along with our Heritage Buses, the trams are also available for hire to help you celebrate your special occasion.
So, whether you want to hire a tram, join us for one of our regular events or just enjoy a very special ride along Blackpool’s Promenade, we have something to offer for everyone.
All of the heritage Tramcars, are, by definition, old! They need tender loving care, maintenance, and in many cases restoration.
Many of them have been moved to different places, different collections, and different owners - so there are opportunities to bring some of them back home, restore them and, one by one, add them to the operational fleet.
Blackpool Heritage Trust are currently fundraising for the restoration of two exciting additions to the fleet - they can't do it without your help!
Our 'phase one' project is to restore the 4-wheel truck from this tramcar to create a rolling chassis onto which we can then rebuild the body.
To complete this we need four brand new steel tyres, at a cost of £500 each.We have already received our first very generous donation of £500 – which will buy us one tyre. Can you help us to fund the other three?
Once we have the foundations of the tram in place, work can then progress towards rebuilding the body and recreating the missing components that will allow Paisley 16 to take its place on Blackpool's Promenade within a reasonable timescale.
This is a dash panel from Paisley 16 from the later stage of its working life when it was Glasgow 1016. You can see from the state of it how large a task is ahead in restoring it to as-new condition!
Any donation, no matter how big or small will help us to achieve the target and move us towards having a fully overhauled truck for this lovely little tramcar. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to Rigby Road when the work commences, to see the progress for themselves.
The Blackpool Hovertram returned to us in September 2016 after almost a decade away and having spent periods of time in both Beith, Scotland, and Sunderland. Latterly in the ownership of the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT), the tram initially came back to us on a long term loan.
However, NEETT have now presented us with a unique opportunity to actually purchase the Hovertram outright, which will allow it to remain as part of the Blackpool collection, in perpetuity. We feel that this is an opportunity that we should not miss, as it will reunite the entire 1960's illuminated collection under one umbrella and in their original home at Rigby Road.
NEETT have very generously agreed to accept a figure of around half of the £7000 that they have themselves invested in the tram in terms of purchase, moving and storage. We are therefore aiming to raise £3,500 to allow the famous illuminated Hovertram to stay in Blackpool, where it belongs!
Again, any donation no matter how big or small will be very much appreciated, and will help us to secure the future of the Hovertram here in Blackpool. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to come and inspect the tram themselves, and to hear first hand about our plans for its future return to use.
To donate to any of the restoration appeals, please send a cheque payable to “Blackpool Heritage Trust” to 16 Seventh Avenue, Blackpool, FY4 2ED, making it clear whether you wish your donation to support Paisley 16, or Illuminated Hovertram 735.
Alternatively, we would very much appreciate monthly standing orders. This form of regular contribution allows us to forward plan our projects, and will help us to build on our achievements so far and deliver the world class collection of Heritage trams that we all desire to see.

For one night only on Thursday 26th October, Blackpool’s iconic collection of illuminated heritage trams will parade along the promenade for the first time in the tramways glorious history.
The world’s first illuminated tram parade will be staged in Blackpool this October as part of a three-day festival of free entertainment.
Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 October. Features spectacular live entertainment between 5pm and 7pm each night.
The illuminated tram parade, featuring the battleship HMS Blackpool, the lottery funded Western Train and the Fisherman’s Friend Trawler, will set off from the Pleasure Beach tram loop at around 5pm, and will then travel along the tramway to Bispham before returning to terminate at Blackpool Pleasure Beach around 75 minutes later.
The parade will visibly slow as it approaches Blackpool Tower to give spectators an opportunity for an unmissable photo and video opportunity.
For those who want to be a part of the parade, there will be a limited number of tickets available for visitors to travel on the trams during the parade.
Tickets are just £8 adult, £4 child or £20 for a family of 4.
Tickets can be purchased in advance by phone on 01253 209521 or email firstname.lastname@example.org (transactions include a £1 booking fee). Please say that you saw it here!
Once the parade is over, the illuminated trams will be running as normal, tickets for these tours are on a first come, first served basis and you must queue at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach tram stop on the night.
On all three nights, visitors will be able to watch performances of Spark! by Worldbeaters Music – a unique and thrilling show that combines high-impact drumming, superb choreography and stunning lighting design.
Visitors will also be able to see for the first time in Blackpool, the incredible talents of AFISHAL. He will perform live his own re-mixes of commercial dance tracks using specially-engineered drums. Not only will you be able to hear the music, but you will also see it “projected” on the front of The Blackpool Tower buildings. It is a show that is not to be missed!
The three day event will be complemented by the free 3D LightPool shows which will be projected on to the front of The Blackpool Tower building throughout Illuminations season between September 1 and November 5.
This year’s LightPool projections will be launched in the w/c September 4 and will feature five individual shows including the three headline shows – Down the Rabbit Hole, Chasing Stars (featuring astronaut Tim Peake) and Enchanted Blackpool. The ideal viewing area to watch the shows is the Comedy Carpet – the area of the Promenade in front of The Blackpool Tower.
Bryan Lindop, Head of Heritage at Blackpool Transport said, “The Illuminated Feature Trams are entirely unique to Blackpool and although they run throughout the illuminations every year, we have never tackled the challenge of operating them all together in convoy before. The opportunity to work in partnership with VisitBlackpool and achieve another amazing first for our wonderful resort was just too exciting an opportunity to miss.
“Every year, the Lightpool Festival gets even more dynamic and spectacular and my team and I are proud to be taking part. Tickets for the processional tour are likely to sell fast, so please book early to avoid disappointment.”

Birkenhead 20 arrives! On 27th July, Birkenhead tram 20 made the journey from its usual home on the Wirral Heritage Tramway, to Blackpool, where it is to enjoy a 12 month holiday! We are extremely grateful to the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society for allowing their beautiful open top tram to pay us a visit, and also to britishtramsonline.co.uk for their support, and readiness to sponsor the move of tram 20 to Blackpool. Our pictures show the arrival of Birkenhead 20 following its journey from the Wirral, and its unloading onto Blackpool rails for the very first time.
